I don't really feel like the subject matter needs to be handled delicately or metaphorically. I do understand there are some people that do feel that way though. My father for instance did not enjoy Django Unchained, whereas I loved it. He felt that the content was too direct and awful, and did not like sitting through humans being that terrible to one another. I felt the opposite and thought that the subject matter was handled brilliantly. Humans are shitty, and I want to see them be shitty if it's part of the story.
While saying that, I do think that games like Papo and Yo can be interesting. Binding of Isaac is another game that has an interesting way to frame child abuse in a religious/potentially cult household.
