The only reason why trans folk get merged into gay communities are due to the terminology made famous in 1970's (LGBT), when transgender issues were not exactly defined but were 'similar enough to the masses' to be lumped in with gays. It's an easy way of looking at it that causes no confusion. A crossdresser who does something for sexual deviancy is in the realm of sexuality, while a crossdresser who does something because it makes them feel accepted is a trans issue.
