What did I miss?
1) the cops didn't tell him anything, an operator did
2) according to zimmerman, martin came out of the bushes and initiated the confrontation
3) even if someone questions you unprofessionally and threateningly, you don't have the right to punch them in the face and bash their head against the sidewalk
4) the fact that you say "somehow a fight breaks out" is pretty much all that was needed to acquit -- that's called reasonable doubt
5) "a fight" is a bit of a misnomer. zimmerman was getting pummeled, martin's knuckles were a little worse for the wear
6) you attribute long-standing racial enmity to zimmerman despite significant evidence that he was not a racist and actually served as a mentor to a black youth

you don't have to like zimmerman. he's a fat sissy, sure. his actions contributed to a truly unfortunate death. but according to his story, which is largely corroborated by available evidence, the only thing he's guilty of is being an idiot. there's not even close to sufficient evidence to convict him of murder. he shouldn't have even been charged if not for the cause célèbre

this thread is stupid but it's amazing how many people still don't have even the most basic understanding of the zimmerman case
It was such an intricate case with so many moving parts.

no it's extremely simple, which is why it's -- and i quote -- "amazing how many people still don't have even the most basic understanding" of the case

there is a world of difference, both legally and practically.

but by all means, continue to have a fervent and unyielding opinion based on ignorant preconceptions. ironic.

As somebody who practices social work I must refrain from insulting mentally retarded people, even if it is the Rants and Flames subforum.

I went back and actually read the 2nd point, and its even more mind-bendingly ridiculous than the first! Didn't think it was possible! The words of the guy standing over the unarmed dead body are usually true, if there's anything I've learned from watching police procedurals. That's probably how it went down, sure.

So if a white kid unaware of his surroundings walked into a black neighborhood with his head shaved and a neo-nazi shirt on, gets into an altercation and dies, would the white community be as outraged as the black community with Zimmerman?

This is the analogy in the heads of a good percentage of Americans. Pray for a plague.
