Good thing to keep in mind right off the bat is that EQ is a harsh, unforgiving world. Expect it to kick you in the nuts. But at the same time, that makes success all the sweeter.

Don't give up if you have a bad night when nothing seems to go for you. There'll be plenty of ones when XP and loot flows and you have awesome groups.

What class you choose can make a huge difference in how able to solo you are, how easy it is to join groups or how much utility you have. Explore them before you settle down, or ask us if you want a more guided approach. Reading the wiki class page and the Guides for ones you consider can teach you a lot too.

Race matters ... and doesn't. There's various reasons to chose certain races for certain classes for their stats or special abilities. Go with that, but don't be worried if you want to go with something you like the look or idea of. Plenty of people play combos that are not the min/max one and are fine. (Hell, on live I played an elf warrior in a top raiding guild and let me tell you elves do not min-max warriors make!)
