I don't say bro anymore unless it's sarcastically, or occasionally through internet chat, or plain just by accident when I forget your name or something.

I do use "brother" often though, and not in a ghetto or religious way. I just think it is respectful and cool towards someone you know well. "Take it easy, brother." I would say "sister" but that's just plain gay.
