Because Azrael are "ratio players". When I used to play Tanarus (a pretty fun tank simulator that was SOEs first online game before EQ game out) that's what we call them. Basically, people trying to kill as many people as they could while very rarely dying.

Map control, capturing flags, etc were not part of their agenda like they were for other players. If they got attacked 3 on 1 and managed to kill 2 before dying, they viewed that as a loss, for example. Most people despised them because they would typically have escape modules loaded (turbos, rockets, etc) if the fight turned against them, and would never engage when victory was going to be unlikely. They would also do things like "shelling" which would be to sit in a spot easy to escape from or somewhere easily defensible and lob long range shells into the battle, stealing kills.

Replace some of the Tanarus terms with EQ ones, like turbos/rockets with zoneplugging/gate pots, replace shelling with goonsquading alt/new player exp groups, etc, and you can see what I mean.

I'm fine with their play style, not that they care. In my youth/RZ days I would have fit far better into Azrael than Nihilum. The Begotten (guild I was in) was very similar in a lot of ways to how Azrael operates. Basically a better version of Azrael, honestly. I was a hardcore ratio player on Tanarus as well, one of the most despised players I think. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Boxxing wasn't that common on live. Paying extra 10 bux a month was embarrassing like buying RMT plat.

Zone lines being "safe" one way or another is a totally critical dynamic of everquest. Being deep within a zone, far from a zone line is a totally different experience than playing next to a zone line in both PVP and PVE.
