I was writing out a reply but lost my post when my browser crashed. Lol. Sooo... instead of writing it all over again I hope you don't mind if I just link you the book info/customer reviews. It explains it better than I could. Don't be put off by this series being called "historical romance" because it isn't. Yes there is a love story at the center of it all but this series has so much more going on.
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon To answer your question about the time travel... yes, there is some back and forth travel throughout the whole series (once she figures out how it's done) but it becomes more and more dangerous each time she goes. If you end up giving it a try it might seem a little slow in the beginning but after page 50 or so it gets really good.
