I spend a lot of my earlier game chop rushing Settlers, and then spamming Praetorians and Catapults before they're obsolete, killing as much of the competition as possible. It works against most players, and it works on Deity. If I'm not playing Rome, I tend to prefer cultural victories. I really love getting four great artists on a border and popping them all at the same time and instantly flipping the cities nearby. When that gets expensive I look around at who hates each other, and hand the cities to their worst enemy so I can get them to declare war on them, if they declare war on me.

Try my island approach bro, they only declare war when you piss em off and that's usually after they met you, and since you're way out of their reach for a few ages you can build freely and not waste precious resource/turns building inferior units.
Woodrow Wilson was right about Isolationist policies, when you only rely on yourself fuck the world
