Try right clicking the shortcut and selecting Properties. Then in the window that pops up select the the compatibility mode options tab. Tell the app to run in 640x480 resolution. I get the same error when I close the game in full screen mode.

Once you're in the game hit alt+enter once or twice and it should revert back to the proper resolution.
