If it is certain the servers will merge, which it is, someone dedicated to catching up would actually be better off rolling on red99. That way they could receive handouts like it seems every damn noob coming to this server receives. Also, if the server is dead they can walk right into Nihilum and raid whatever content they want while teams is still sitting in classic without Kunark.

Teams will be a server that is fun until the merge, then all will have been for nothing. You have to play the teams server with the mind set that it is temporary and just for fun.

Keep in mind they haven't been too descriptive about how the merge will even work. They were throwing ideas all over the place during a single discussion, and I'm sure many things will change by the time they actually hash out the ruleset and plans for teams.

For all we know they'll scrap the idea of a merge and simply naked transfer your toon to your choice of the two remaining servers. I imagine discussion about how over-farmed Red toons merging into Teams will affect the economy has to come into play at some point...

A traditional merge is really a terrible idea and would destroy the Teams server. The best course of action would be to copy Red characters to both Blue and Teams, except their Blue copies have gear and the Teams copies go naked or with a minimal, no drop gearset.

This gives Red players the choice of continuing to play their geared characters on Blue, or to re-gear their already leveled character on Teams. The characters merged to Teams should also not be available until at least one month after Kunark is released, possibly longer depending on population numbers.

This is the only solution that makes sense for both the Teams server and existing Red players.

Don't merge the servers, just keep red the way it is and stop providing support for it. Pull the life support and let it die out with its cancer and hope it doesn't spread.
