Based on my memory of Vallon Zek, mage bolts tripped up on geometry all the time and wouldn't land, pets were insanely easy to fear/snare/mez, and mages had pretty bad nukes. They got some help when Sony gave them a fear-immune buff for their pets, but that just meant you rooted the pet or dispelled it before casting fear.

Well if you are dispelling the pet and casting fear the mage could just as easily dispel you and dispel the pet in that time.
Mages are forced to do damage through pet once their DDs become worthless... which sucks.. but the pets are pretty powerful.
Also, all the melees can't fear/root/mez. If you are mezing as an enchanter... you are in the same position, no pets and nukes that are worthless on both sides.
