your buddy have some guilt he was carrying? not sure of any distinction between "angels" or "demons" anymore. they seem to be beings within being like a stranger on a sidewalk or a cat, and some are mischievous and some are calm but they all can affect what you're doing in that present moment with some interaction. i think the amazonian shamans are more in line with what's really happening in those situations.

He must have felt guilty about something man, im not sure exactly what his deal was that night, he is really religious, me, not so much, and yes i agree with the amazonian native ideals of otherworldly beings
