I remember low health being a problem to the extent that if someone dropped low health while grouped the mob was going to V-line straight to them. No amount of taunting or hate increase would pull the mob off until the low health person was healed or killed. Time frame on when it was like this, I'm not so sure, 2000-2005?

Does anyone have any proof that this actually was a classic mechanic though.
I don't see how it could have been Classic on dial up. Lucky to pull 15 mobs back then. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

You ppl act like low hp aggro is only there for bards to profit from and that it's not relevant in any other aspect of EQ.

Wrong.

Low hp aggro makes raiding more challenging, grouping more challenging etc. Low hp aggro on a raid mob? You're dead. game over.

It's there for a reason and just because bards take advantage of it in a positive way doesn't mean remove it and dumb down the game where its intended to work in a negative way.

When the huge amount of threat that low hp causes was changed down the road, it was only changed to make things "easier" for other content ie who cares if so and so has shitty resists and gets low health, they won't get aggro and bad play is excused.

Low HP kiting doesn't trivialize content any more than 3PBAOE+2ENC does in Hate, Fear, Chardok, etc. Both were difficult to accomplish in Classic because of the lower hardware standards of 1999-2001, not due to different game mechanics.

Want to know what isn't classic? Finding an exploit (read: unintended use of mechanics) and spreading it around the internet like a wildfire. All while abusing the crap out of it getting as much xp, pp, loot as possible before its changed (or not changed). People used to fear retribution on the internet, now they don't.

Not saying creative mechanic usage is good or bad, if the fear is a quick level 50/60 on the PvP server than just have level caps and its all good.

A YouTube video was posted in this thread... YouTube came out 7 years after EQ just for some perspective.

That is not at ALL how aggro used to work, not classic even in the slightest IDEA of the word classic.

EQ is about beating pve content using any tools at your disposal. There is nothing more fundamentally wrong with low-hp kiting than with rooting a pack of mobs and charming one at a time, using an invis clicky to farm insane xp.

Creative use of game mechanics IS EverQuest. That's the game. Bitching about someone being too good at it is crazy.
Except that's not how aggro is supposed to work, especially if some people want to keep harping about "classic"

That's just the thing, after 14 years, shit SHOULDN'T BE CLASSIC. Why? Because people exploit the fuck out of things, that SOE would have patched in within a week. That's classic. Do these kinds of exploits get picked up and fixed that quickly here? No way.

I don't understand how this isn't a classic mechanic. Low hp agro has been in EQ since the dawn of time, people just have the resources (tech) and the smarts to accomplish more now than they did in 1999. People do the same thing on Mac and if anything it's less risk over there because the agro doesn't transfer off to another player after 30-50% of damage is done.
