RMT is an issue because this is 2013.

It's what people do, have been doing for 15+ years, and will always do. You essentially have 2 real options:

1. Acknowledge it, don't care
2. Acknowledge it, care

You can debate intracasies and circle-jerk to the convo all you want but at the end of the day you still only have just 2 options and it's not nearly as complex as nefarious as some people wish it were (for some reason)

EDIT: I should add to this post that I don't think it's any worse on P99 than it is on any other MMO in the world, I just feel it receives a lot more attention here due to the way serverstaff handle it and the small tight-knit community. It also doesn't help that every single time someone is banned for it a 40 page monster thread pops-up where people sit and try to understand what is so wrong with the world today.

RMT is an issue partly because of the community (which no one wants to admit). When you trash a tank because he has shit gear, rogue is trashed because he's not twinked or a guy actually sits outside a group and says get rid of Bob and take me I'll do more damage because I'm twinked; you've created a peer pressure situation.

It makes people just feel bad.

Then they come to the forums and say "What do I do?" and then people tell them make xyz class for your first class... then you can farm up to twink up the class you really want to play.

So I'm going to take a shot that this game as a lot of folks who can't play nearly as much as they used to and you've told them... hey spend crap loads of time and then you'll get to have fun and play what you really want to play. Let's not even get into the funny business that happens at any cash camp.

Or you can just pay some money (because you have a lot more money than time at this stage of your life) and skip to step 3 and have fun.

If you can't see why its attractive or "don't get it" you're lying to yourself or just stupid.

Me? I'm hoping beyond hope that I love a shaman at end game and don't have a step 2 and 3.

PS - this is helped by the people assisting new players, but how many newbies are actually getting help?
It's not as if there is a skid row in Kelethin where all the newbies who absolutely cannot play because they don't have awesome twink gear are forced to hang out and beg because they have nothing else to do.

Giving away free gear isn't the best way to help new players enjoy the game IMO. The quest for better gear is a massive part of the progression in this game for all classes, and the majority of it for melees. Giving someone stuff that they will use for 30 levels takes a lot of fun out of the game.

Yeah I know, there are some people who just want to be awesome and will take any shortcut to getting there. But on a lot of levels I really don't understand the mentality of playing classic EQ with the intention of racing to max level as fast as possible and treating the entire processes as a chore that you can buy your way out of...it really does defeat the purpose of playing this game.

EQ is one of the few MMORPGs where leveling up and obtaining gear is actually fun and rewarding...why cheat yourself out of that and take on a race to end game and BiS gear modern MMO mentality. There are hundreds if not thousands of games that will better cater to that play style.

On another note, it is your fault for listening to all the min-maxers who insist that no melee be played without a few hundred K to spend on twinking them. In every "what should I play" thread there are plenty of people telling those players to just play whatever they want.

Gadwin believe it or not in a game that requires grouping ... play whatever you like doesn't really fly. Otherwise there'd be a lot more rangers & palies (there were tons during live at this same period). All you need is 1 or 2 dudes in a group who are min maxers... and now you got an issue.

I get what you're saying, but its a happy path scenario.

This type of attitude is what pisses me off. Some dude saying "The Plat I bought didn't make my life any easier I worked hard blah blah blah"

My main is lvl 17 and I am still wearing all cloth from Black burrow. I got a Stein of Moggok from spending a whole night running all over Norrath and a crude stein along with an earing from kind hearted players. I had to spend a whole night farming the same 3 bandits in Lfay which were crap EXP just so I could get 60pp worth of bronze off of them in order to pay for my spells.

Now I am not complaining because that is the classic EQ experience I have signed up for and it also makes you really appreciate when someone in the community steps up to help you. Don't try and tell me that the infused amount of Plat you bought yourself did not save you from having to trade off being in decent EXP groups just so you can scrounge enough cash to buy a spell you need.

Fact is you came here for classic EQ and then took the easy way and to say that the plat you bought didn't give you an edge is a slap in the face of us broke honest players. It's also people like you who cause the current view of frowning upon the none twinked players when in reality its those of us who make due with nothing and still manage to play well and survive in this game that learn our class better than most.

Play that rerolled character honestly and then try and come back here and say that plat you used to cheat with did make your life easier. I have a feeling you will see things differently.

FWIW, You all must run in to some real wicked assholes. I leveled two characters on this server to the mid 40's and early 50's from scratch with no twinking (besides Zilo randomly helped me get a tainted bastard sword early on my SK) and not once did anyone ever complain to me about my gear or deny me a group because of my lack thereof. And that's even with the first scratch character being a tank! If someone is giving you shit about your gear, it's most likely just one person, and they are either a full-time p99 player-elitist, or is just really desperate to try to boost their own self-esteem by putting you down. In that case you need to toughen up and brush it off.

Actually Nikon if that was in reference to that sentence in my post then please don't get me wrong.

One thing about P99 is that the community is far nicer than any I have ever witnessed on a live server.

Yes there are some real Assholes out there but they are few and far between and I suppose I just like to lump those people who are so materialistic about their gear with those who tend to get that gear at whatever real life cost.

I just get pissed when I hear someone who paid money to give themselves an edge try and say that the items and plat they bought didn't really make all that much of a difference in helping them progress, when its obvious as a person who has had to trade EXP leveling verses scrounging for loot to buy spells let alone gear that they certainly took the easy road and fail to acknowledge it.

So I certainly agree with you that aside from those who choose to cheat this server is populated with some awesome people.

The up side is that's its very clear that the staff is putting in their free volunteered time to reduce the server of said cheaters.

Not necessarily your post. I've just been seeing it more and more. Sounds like forum trolls perfecting the art in-game and I don't see it as a legitimate excuse to buy plat.

Lecompte helped me out when I first started. He gave me 100 pp to gear up. I got disgusted with the greedy twinks and sold everything I bought and gave him back more than he gave (I am a good investment). When I gave the server a second Chance, Pringles gave me 300pp which I have turned into almost 50k worth of items on all my characters. I don't have the best gear, but I am content with what I have and feel I am an asset to any group I join.

Don't get caught up with what others have. Just play and be patient. Riches will come eventually and you will like it better knowing you earned it.
