I can agree with TS, I don't even know all that much about everquest, but tried the sony eq and don't like it nearly as much as the classic version, know nothing of raiding in this game at all, only other MMO's, and I enjoy the game itself, alone or grouped. One of the few rpg's that I regain my patience with and come back to it. Got a warrior and a rogue into the 20's thus far.

The reason you like vanilla EQ is the same reason games like Skyrim are great. There's travel time and other "annoyances" (god I hate people who don't appreciate immersive worlds) that make you feel like you're in a world and not a lobby to queue for battlegrounds and dungeons. I just hope there's no flying mounts. They were cool at first but they destroy world mechanics.

When I started here I will admit I did want the "uber" items I never was able to attain on live. I played long enough that I eventually gained enough platinum to twink the melee I wanted, and it was boring. I had 1,000x more fun in my starter guild tunic at trainer hill in Crushbone or in bronze armor in Unrest.. Soloing with a Fungi and CoF just feels like "work" and a complete waste of time.
The most fun on P99 is grouping, making friends, going to a zone you never have been to, and getting better at your class (learning to pull a tricky dungeon, etc). Having a min/max attitude, power-leveling your toon, AE kiting, and mega-twinking takes the complete piss out of anything that made EQ enjoyable.

So on P99 I'm playing an iksar shaman so that I can level a character in kunark for the first time and actually enjoy looting upgrades in Kurns =p
