I think on emu, when you angle yourself up yer not really in the water.. This would explain both why sometimes you skip along the top of lava and don't get burned as much and why you are not getting skill (assuming you're angled up) but the dude in kedge is..

Try angling down and swimming?

Think this is true. Its hit or miss, but every once and awhile I notice a movement change with selos when swimming and looking up.
