That list is also over 7 years old. Some of those players have made quite a bit more. Also as was stated earlier most pro magic players make the jump into the WSOP and earn a lot more money. David Williams and Eric froelich are probably the most well know. Gabriel nassif is also another but im not sure he has had as much success.
I completely missed the updated date. My bad!

When did Williams get in trouble besides the Accumulated Knowledge thing in 2001? He got busted, he took his suspension like a man, and then he came back playing clean. Do you honestly think he's getting by cheating in the WSoP?

Why are you trying to pretend that there aren't dozens of pros making a nice income off Magic? You realize there aren't that many pros, right? You might want to keep in mind that a lot of these guys are my friends. One of the friends I caught up with at GP Minneapolis was David. He's a great guy. He's friendly, humble, and funny. He's also never been particularly close with Mike Long, though he played some of Mike's decks.

A lot of people played some of Mike's decks. Mike is an amazing deckbuilder. He was also a hellish opponent because even if he wasn't cheating, he was using wicked psychological tricks on you. Mike and I aren't close, but I think he deserves to be in the HoF. I think Mark Justice does, too, and *I* am actually the guy who caught him with the Muscle Sliver. The official account is wrong--they used the print run variation to prove it, but I was in the dealer room when he went to get the fourth sliver. That incident is the reason that premier event limited cards get stamped now.

If you think about it, WotC has done an excellent job of improving their officiating. Every guy who gets caught helps prevent future cheating.

You seem to be emotionally invested in bashing Magic right now. Your arguments are getting weaker and you're exaggerating and telling lies. I think you're pissed off that you don't have more anime allies in RnF and I'm confused by it. Surely there are forums where you can happily share your anime fandom? This just isn't one. For whatever reasons, this particular group of people doesn't have a lot of anime fans.

"I was there, I know all of them and I was actually the guy who caught him?"

I'm sorry but I'm not that gullible to believe all of those coincidences. Calling BS on all accounts.

Last time I heard such an elaborate claim was when they were trying to convince us Bush knocked down the towers.

As you wish. I played on the pro tour between 1997 and 1999.

In 1995 or 1996 I went to school with a kid (and during one semester we drank his family's liquor cabinet) whose step-dad had been one of the original creators of Magic but had sold his stake to WotC. Still, they had a whole room in their house stocked with unopened boxes of the cards, from floor to ceiling -- all from various different sets and stuff, I guess. I don't know, because I only dabbled in the early nineties and was more interested in PnP RPGs than card games, but I did steal one of those boxes because I knew it had value.

In one of my least proud moments, I was caught. They were pretty clever about it. The step-dad called my house and pretended to be a detective with the Colorado Springs Police and convinced me that if I just returned the box all would be forgiven. I brought it to school the next day and gave it to his stepson and they revealed their deception to which I replied: Doh.

That's my Magic story.

You're all overlooking how the money in magic is actually made. Sure some people have pulled in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tournament winnings, but people aren't making money off of tournament winnings.

They make their money by using their tournament winnings and continued success and then leverage that by content writing/theorycrafting/appearing elsewhere. Just take a look at http://www.starcitygames.com/ and look at all the pros/former pros that are being paid to write articles for SCG. On top of that, some of them (like chapin) have written books to further supplement their earnings.

Winning a pro-tour or worlds title is nice and all, but when the top earners have made under 400k in their lives, spread over the last 15 years that's not exactly enough to live on and have to do nothing else (unless you live in shit/squalor and live off of ramen). Sure those that play poker can win considerably more, and THEY can liv off their winnings, but not all magic players are successful poker pros.

Most earn their paychecks writing about magic for other sites or use their winnings to go to college/open up businesses etc.

Contrary to OP's narrative, having known some of these people they are not basement dwelling sperlords like the magic players you may encounter on Friday nights at your local gameshops. Most of the people winning tours and making a living off of magic are older, know they cannot live off of prize money alone, and generally pretty intelligent.

Forgot to add, online/offline card sales in the secondary market are a HUGE part of the game. Not sure if any/how many pros successfully run/operate businesses that deal in cards, but it's a pretty decent gig, especially if you have connections to get cards for cheap/technical abilities to write online bots.

I wish I could edit my first post..

"You're all overlooking how the money in magic is actually made. Sure some people have pulled in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tournament winnings, but people aren't making money off of tournament winnings.

Should read:

"You're all overlooking how the money in magic is actually made. Sure some people have pulled in hundreds of thousands of dollars in tournament winnings, but people aren't making a living off of tournament winnings.

They make their living"

There's some money in writing, but more in the cards. Adrian Sullivan and Mike Flores do okay, but both have other jobs. All the pros I know have other jobs except David Williams. Everyone I know plays for fun; the money is just a bonus. On the other hand, Ben Bleiweiss and Dan Bock (neither of whom were ever PT regulars) make big coin selling cards, and Steve Port makes a nice living running big events, distributing product, and running a couple stores. Dan Bock drives a black Lotus.
