I guess the distinction I make is whether or not someone is overtly hostile to other people's beliefs and feels an overwhelming desire to prove them wrong and/or call them idiots. I think those atheists who do are wrong and idiots.

The problem with being a passive atheist (which I am) is that while we're being all passive, the zealot Christians have organized and are in the process of implanting political representation in our government. While their success has faltered recently, I don't see them throwing in the towel anytime soon.

That's an awful broad brush to paint with. I mean seriously, there are Christians of every political affiliation. That there are some who believe the country should operate differently than I is no surprise, either -- and they deserve to have their voices heard and their beliefs represented. While there may be an argument to made that having faith is symptomatic of a need to belong and thus the faithful are easily coerced into following whatever the herd accepts that's not the argument I see. I see: "I disagree with their beliefs and don't like that they are organizing in the exact same way I am allowed to organize".
