Snare an NPC then leave the zone (or log out, some log out faster then others using their "mothers/girlfriends/etc" IP exemption). The NPC will then stay where it last was before you zoned/logged.

Might be what happened.

generally the mob only stays in place until snare wears off (works for root too afaik). once i snared a scareling in fear, gated out, went back 2-3 hours later, and that same scareling was still snared [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] so maybe this?
