They would probably just add an X at the end of your merged characters name and then they'll work on petitions to clean up name change once they have time.

This I don't know. If it were my call, I would give about a months notice saying more or less that if you want your characters merged, you need to make sure you have room in your character select screen or else the Green chars will be wiped.

This is what they did on live.

"Clever" people made Alts named Buttse on both servers and when the server forced an X onto the end of one of the names they kept that toon.

Lots of petitions resulted from people getting X's added onto the end of their name.

I think if you had more than 8 on a merging server they deleted the lowest levels and kept all the highest.

The most logical thing would be to just make your green characters on a new account entirely.
