Beetles in NK are slower than the things you listed in RS1.
I think griffons are faster than cats/wolves; I was unable to get away from them in the teens even with MM drums and selos.

Just started to mess with a bard and had the same experience. Level 13 bard with MM drums and I agroed a low level griffon in my beetle round up then had to strafe to get distance on him because he was still attacking me when I auto ran straight to get away.
