TBC era shamans sucked I thought. They changed from being "a warrior with totems" (enhancement was godlike) to breaking that part of the tree and forcing you to be either a healing shammie or a mage type shammie.
This is not how i remember it, but again.. memory.

TBC era enhancement shamans were godlike dps, drawback was they couldn't control it. We only raided with 1 enh shaman but he was always near top dps, the issue they had was the spike dps that would pull threat and kill them because in this era they have no way to dump threat. Couple big windfury crits, earthshock crit and down they go.

Is this game anywhere near launch? I'm seeing forum posts quoting launch Q1 2013. It's been pushed back and back which isn't bad since they seem to be focused on getting it right.
Dunno, the dude who's trying to get me to play makes it seem like it's launching soon but he's probably full of shit.

I always enjoyed playing a rogue
When I briefly played WoW I played a rogue and jesus did I end up regretting that. So boring. I remember the shamany dudes in the guild seemed pretty cool and I wished I had been one of them. Kinda don't want to play Hunter because a) there were like 8 hunters for everyone else and b) there was that op dps item from Gruul called Dragonspine Trophy or something that I really wanted for my rogue, but it was ultra rare and some hunter beat me by 1 on the roll for the only one that ever dropped for us and never logged in again. Fuck that guy.

i would suggest warlock, as they are consistently powerful throughout the whole progression and have some really handy utility.
I don't remember Warlocks ever doing shit besides tanking that one boss in the Shissar ripoff dungeon. It's like they had to flag one boss "must be tanked by a Warlock" just so you would remember the class existed. I actually forgot until they were mentioned.

In retrospect, they should have made Xerkizh the Creator only tankable by Druids. Dropped the ball, Sony.

I don't know if this changed since I last played, but at least while leveling up prot warrior was the way to go. Shield slam your heart out.

edit: if you're going to play wow, just try out different classes. Comparatively speaking it takes no time at all to go 1-20 in that game and you get a pretty good sense for each class by that point.

For 2.4.3 TBC.

PvE Wise:
If you want to PvE, shamans were by far the most in demand class since heroism/bloodlust is absolute king in Sunwell DPS checks. We would bring something dumb like 7/25 players as shaman to Sunwell. Bloodlust was group only and gave no exhaustion, so you just rotated shaman into DPS groups. Brain (Chain) Heal made them the best PvE healers as well.

Shadow priest is another good option PvE wise. Vampiric Touch and moderate DPS made shadow priests really coveted at the high end. I pushed about 1600 DPS on Brutallus which comes out to be 160mana/5 + Heals for a group of healers. The class also has a priority cycle (which ended up being the design standard in WotLK+) as opposed to a macro to mash. So, it's a bit more involved than mashing the same macro.

PvP Wise:

If you want to heal - go druid. The focus shift from 5v5 to 3v3 made druids kings of TBC healing. They were by far the most powerful healer in a 2v2 or 3v3 setting during this era. Consequently, almost every top 2s/3s comp utilized a druid.

If you want to kill stuff at range, go warlock.

If you want to kill stuff in melee, go rogue.

I didn't read every post so unsure which side you are choosing but since you asked about Shamans I am assuming you are going Horde. In TBC era I always enjoyed my Mage, topped dps charts on nearly every raid I attended (enchanced critical pyroblast FTW). If you want to blow shit up go mage although make sure for the leveling process to go frost spec, then switch to fire/arcane at later levels.

If you are going alliance I really enjoyed my pally, they are essential backup or even primary healers sometimes (especially against Maiden in Karazhan), plus you have the option of being a tank.

I never once gave 2 shits about wow PVE but on the PVP end I have to disagree with druid being best healer. Rogue/Mage/Preist was hands down best 3s comp and 2s was all Rogue/Mage.

I never found druids to be anything more than a minor nuisance as a mage in that area. Id steal their HoTs at critical times and use counter spell since their heals came from one tree and generally just burst them down with insane crits. I know that dru/war/lock was popular but I still contend RMP was the best comp you could make in that era. Disc priest was just icing on the cake.
