i always just ask people to help me and nobody has ever taken my stuff. though, my stuff is not very valuable either. if someone one does stiff you though, they can be prosecuted under project law, whereas the ground cannot and the staff will not entertain any complaints about it.

Pretty much this. If you drop transfer something and someone comes by and grabs it too bad but if you hand someone something to transfer and they steal it they gonna get a sirkened.
