Trivial doesn't mean you can't fail a combine (and subsequently lose your materials) -- just ask any smith that failed a Fine Steel Plate trivial.
The failrate for trivial items is about 5%.

The only trivial combines that were no fail on live was combining silk to swatches or spiderling silk to threads.

You won't start getting your best success rate until you are about 20 points or so above the trivial level.

Allakhazam has the revamped research combines on doesn't it? Hence different trivs, since they have spells that are trivial to 300+ skills (level 75 spells etc)
