It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these threads.

Summer always seems to encourage the best activities! Hunting, fishing, doing beach…

What have you been up to to stay in good form socially, mentally and physically? How do you attrition time’s inevitable decay?

Hopefully can beat it this coming Jan. Had an unforseen problem with my right foot. It wasn’t a blister, I’ve had my fair share of those. It was more like a friction burn, like what would happen if a coarse rope slipped very fast through ungloved hands. It never filled with fluid, just got darker and harder and angrier as the days went on. But after a few days I could run again with it double bandaged

Shirt was a big hit. You might think I was doing that front double bicep flex for the picture. But no I was holding it most of the race, especially whenever I passed someone

Hehehe

Last one burned about 1.6k calories, so that + water weight should be approaching maybe a pound lost lol. It’s fun to be able to eat whatever the F you want that day afterwards with no worries/guilt

Paying someone else money to run yourself :/

Mostly for the spectacle

When you have 15,000ish contestants (x2 for spectators) all gathering in the same place for the same purpose there’s a kind of energy and shared excitement that is hard to describe, one of those have to be there sort of things. You sort of feel a connection to others without even saying a word

And while it is important to be able to push yourself solo, there’s nothing like a crowd yelling encouragement and a tangible “opponent” just up ahead to pass to motivate me personally to gun it harder. Or to stay ahead of someone, sometimes you sort of inadvertently find a “race adversary” who you end up going back and forth with in passing/being passed as you each play the mental game of managing one’s energy, fatigue, and remaining strength through the miles. It’s a lot of mental work and having tangible “threats” makes it easier to do that work. In fact, when I run solo if it’s a timed preparation run I’m visualizing the upcoming race environment as I push myself

But anyway, that’s just my whimsy. It’s not for everyone

Recently I’ve been a big admirer of Sportacus. A bit late to the party, I know, but what a dude.

I had no idea what you were talking about because my only exposure to Lazy Town has been that “you are a pirate” song that became a meme. I do remember my buddy and I singing lines from that occasionally to our vanilla WoW guild back in the day to annoy them until they muted us

So I had to do some digging but I ultimately have to agree on Sportacus. I never realized the entire show was written to attempt to creatively encourage kids to exercise. Should have guessed by the name

And also, I can’t believe the part of Spartacus lore where he and his buddy both became national champions in a randomly picked sport on a bet! Like what the hell was the agreed upon cost? Loser dies or something? That’s crazy effort just to win a bet lol

I think this vid by Back Guy does a good homage. Thanks for enlightening me on this subject! :)

My gym is shutting down. I mean, I am a member of all the gyms but the one 3 minutes from my house that has a heated Olympic sized pool I swim laps at 4x/week is closing down for good. Their hours are already cut to where I can’t make it after work, and they’re gone in a week

So the nearest “backup” with a pool is like 7 miles and 15ish mins away, not the end of the world but I was spoiled. I went to check it out for the first time tonight, and it’s basically heaven

It’s huge, first of all. Biggest I’ve ever been a member to, and like I said I go to all the gyms (not really but I’m a member of more than I should be). Amazing array of machines, all available at the late time (right before close) that I go. Way more people than my old pool gym had

And the people seem both fit (but not freaky big) and cool. I’m sitting in the sauna for the first time and this jacked Hippie Jesus looking dude who’s maybe 10years younger asks “hey can I pour some essential oils on here and make it smell really good?” To all of us. And I said “yea and good thing because I was about to stink this place up with BO”

And the dude poured the oil or whatever and the place smelled so fucking good. And then two other dudes in there are saying “what I like about here is how clean they keep it” as if they know there’s some of us displaced first timers there. And the other dude goes “yea, that janitor is great, let’s tip him”. And the other dude is like “great idea”

And I wanted to be like “what the fuck is wrong with you people?” I felt like I was on some wholesome sitcom

Then I go into the locker room and oh the smell, and in a good way, not something you would normally hear. Not sure if it’s those essential oils or some spray but it smelled so good I was like I need to find out what that is and cover myself in that shit. I’d drink that it smells so good

I know those sprays aren’t good for you but it smelled so good like I’m like i’ll take the God Damn lung cancer. Anyway, solid first experience. Might make this gym my main bitch

Shasta was colder than Baker due to the time of year I was there, and also bc it is 4,000' higher

when it's that cold, even the snow is dry, so goretex doesn't really matter... insulation is king (weight in oz. of down). the parka i wore on Shasta has ~6 or 7oz of down in it. the one i wore on Baker has ~3oz.

def need a layer that is windproof to go on top of it all though or you can get hypothermic very quickly if the winds pick up and saps away all your hard-earned heat.

generally mountaineering is all about layering correctly. takes a long time and a lot of experience to dial it all in. you are constantly adding/removing layers during the climb depending on the conditions and your current temp. if you start sweating, that can easily become a life threatening situation, bc the clothes will get damp and then if the wind picks up you are mega fucked

i had 4 pairs of gloves for shasta and used all of them at different times

Holy cow and I used to think deep sea scuba was complicated with their tanks and gas mixtures (which I also don’t do lol)

But I shouldn’t be surprised, I literally just a few days ago listened to one of my natural disaster true stories about a bf/gf that got lost on a hike through inclement snow weather and the bf froze to death. I knew he was done when his gf noticed he was slurring his speech and taking his coat off saying it was “buggered” or something. My heart kinda sank realizing that was the hypothermia and his brain freezing :(

Seems like you have lots of practice with it. The expression the devil is in the details comes to mind, in terms of preparing for anything. I doubt I will ever go mountaineering because I don’t do well in the cold but I will keep this in mind if so :)

Fell on my hike today…

I never fall. Not once in 2-3 hikes/weekend for the past 8ish years. Not sure if it’s the fact I have completely flat feet, fallen arches on both feet. Or if it was the 10ish years of competitive TKD training like 6hrs/day in the summer. Of course I’ve stumbled dozens of times, but always can easily correct before my brain even catches up to what I did. My body does it and the cognitive part of my brain is like “oh yea do that, good call” after it happens

My ritual is normally to start the day with a protein shake mixed with stuff like metamuscil and collagen peptides. But I was completely out. I fished around in my pantry for some old leftover and discovered a free sample of protein I had gotten

The problem was it was some sleepytime night version with a bunch of melatonin and other sedative supplement chemicals in there. But it was all I had and I figured I’ll have pre-workout in me, good luck making me feel tired

Was bombing up insisting on being the fastest up (pass everyone, no one passes or stays caught up), but I realized about 3/4 of the way up, “oh shit, this stuff is more powerful than I thought”

I felt drugged. Like drunk. Balance started to suffer, and a perfect storm happened of people coming down all in a row blocking any way to get by without having to stop. I went left to go around someone, then left again when I realized that way was blocked, and there was no where left to go but a cliff (this was a really steep part, like scrambling for most people steep)

I stumbled and realized I was falling towards like a 10ish feet cliff about 4 feet away. And the scary thing was my drugged brain didn’t care. It felt like a dream I was in, because this kinda stuff never happens. But I heard the people around me I was going around gasp in unison. And then I thought “oh shit, this is bad”…

So I went down kinda hard on knees and hands taking a bit of damage to stop myself pronto. Got a little scraped up but I stopped before the cliff

All I said to the people was “sorry I had nowhere to go”. But it wasn’t their fault. It was the protein 100%. Props to drugs on that one, you easily beat me, even with my drugs helping me

Still was fastest up even with having to repeatedly pause and wash blood off my leg ;)

this kind of ego is so silly to me, the mountains dont care about you and it'll get you killed one day. maybe ask yourself why you feel this way

No need to ask, I am ultra competitive in anything physical. Always have been. I think it goes back to being a little kid and having my dad constantly ingrain in my head that if I was doing some physical activity, I had to be the best. This expanded into training 6 hours a day over the summer as a kid doing martial arts, wrapping ourselves in trash bags and running laps around the park in the summer with some kids getting heat stroke. Or how my dad rigged a cup of water with straps around my head to make sure my form and head movement was perfect when doing forms. I was one of the only kids who sparred adults, and nothing like taking a full on kick from an angry 35yr old man who you as a 10 year old kid just kicked in the head to make the hits from other kids feel like pillows

So I know how I am and why I am like that. Would I want it any other way? Probably not, it’s 90% of what keeps me going. I don’t think I would even continue to exercise at all if I wasn’t comparing myself to others. Just like how when I played mmorpg’s, my entire focus was getting better gear to be able to kill other players better. Then when rated pvp came out, I had to be the highest rated team on the server

Nature vs nurture, and I guess nurture won

This hike, while labeled “extremely difficult” is far from alpine hike difficult. It has at any time on a weekend close to 150+ people on it. There are spots where a clump of 10ish people all get bottlenecked waiting for someone’s kid to get over one of the only spots to continue on

This means that there is near-guaranteed to be someone around if someone needed help. I have reported various things like injuries and heat stroke to the park rangers at the base probably about 10 different times throughout the years. I have also given my extra water I bring away to people who asked dozens of times as well

If I had to guess as to how many times I have done this hike…well 104 weekends in a year, with 2-3 times per weekend hiking it, for the past 8ish years = somewhere between 1,664 to 2,496 times. I am convinced that I have done it so much that I have literally stepped in the exact same spots the entire entire way up and down in previous trips

Why do I keep doing it? Wouldn’t that get boring? For me the benefits are:

- it’s very close to my home, only a 15 min drive

- it’s steep enough to be a good workout still

- relatively short, not time consuming, I can get to the summit in 25 minutes and about 45mins down (I never haul down), so roughly a little over an hour total time

- I like to have people to compete against around and I like to be seen. I always perform better when people are watching. And this hike is considered the most popular in the entire state

I am also not alone, nor am I the best. There are a few regulars who I refer to as the “mountaineers” who are cardio machines who I have never beat. And there used to even be a “leaderboard” website of crazy summit times, with the fastest I think being something ridiculous like 14 minutes to the summit, which would be running the entire way (considering some spots are so steep they have railings not sure how this is even possible). Although I am faster than 99% of other climbers

Also, considering my balance is such that I have never fallen in years unless literally drugged, not worried about it

Would I behave the exact same on one of your alpine hikes? Hellllll no ;)

Getting to know our new Lizard Overlords?
Also, cool.

Watering him always draws a bit of a crowd, which is fun. I use the time to offer some eduction to the people around because I almost always get some tourist or some kid asking “whoa, is that a Gila Monster?”. I have seen a Gila monster once on the trail a long time (years) ago, but they are super rare, and I don’t expect to see one again :(

I mention to the crowd things like that Chuckwallas are notoriously brave around people. And that their self defense strategy is to wedge themselves in between rocks, puff their body up so you can’t pull them out, and whip you with their tail if you try. Sometimes Charles will start doing some push ups in place, I’m assuming to get a nice pump for the people taking pics

It did take some time of me slowly approaching while pouring water out so he can see it for him to finally accept my offering. With Charles you do have to come correct or he will run away

I guess in that regard he is like a little…

Oh I kicked a soccer ball back to a group of little Hispanic kids (probably around like 8ish), and so every lap they kicked a soccer ball at me to kick back

Normally I’d really enjoy that but it did slow me down and throw me off my rhythm :/

For 1 year now, I have put more emphasis on health. I started to regularly engage in sports 2-3 times a week, I regularly visit the doctors and receive different supplements to maintain everything. Especially now in winter it is really necessary to take care of health through vitamins. I used a promo code for affordable pharmacy essentials in Germany (https://www.bummelwelt.de/gutscheincode/gesundheit/).

Black and white thinking

Obesity is partially a choice and it partially isn’t. The “isn’t” part is your shitty genetics with your abnormally-always-high ghrelin hormone and your genetically-withered dead thyroid or whatever. Or the fact that you have no free time to work out. Or you had a spine injury 8 years ago and now every movement is pain. That’s not a choice

But the rest is a choice. And for most people, the choice part far outweighs the non-choice part. If there’s dudes living in 3rd world slums exposed to absurd amounts of pollution causing them 50 different health problems from birth, who still crawl or whatever their way to their job burning tires for 10 cents a day…then you can work out with your health problems and shitty genetics. The human body can adapt to quite a lot

And it is technically do or die, just on a longer timeline

hey Nope4 have you looked up under/over-pronation ? Sounds like the way your feet are landing on each running step isn't great and there's shoes out there that can help with it.

You might have flat feet too (collapsed foot arches) which is more common as you get older and might be a cause.

I do have two flat feet. I’ve known for a long time that a flat step is supposed to be the ideal for distance runners (not sure about sprinters). Now whether I do well it is tough to know because I don’t have a running coach to analyze my stride

But I’ll definitely look into this! Unfortunately the race is only a week away now and I haven’t really been able to train due to prioritizing recent dating life on my off days :(

So I’m running my usual route around the park, did 6 untimed laps so roughly 7ish miles with the to and from

And the entire time I notice what I thought was a fat chick sitting on a concrete section at the edge of one part of the park, right along my route. Didn’t think much of it, other than it being rare to see people at the park at 9:30 at night when I’m running unless there is a sports game going on for high schoolers. And usually it’s not a lone chick. Too fat to easily abduct at least…

But on my 5th lap around and she’s still there. Except now so is a cop talking to her. So I turn my music down to totally evesdrop on them as I zip by. And I realize it’s not a she at all, it’s a fat long haired dude and I couldn’t tell because it was so dark

And HE’S saying to the cop something about his dad telling him to take his meds. He seemed adult sized, he came across as early 20’s, maybe autistic. Then I noticed as I went by a box near him. I assumed initially it was a suitcase of some sort because it appeared he had bailed from home and had nowhere to go but the park

But then I realized it was his computer tower. And I thought oh you adorable little fat nerd. I’m sorry this is going on, but you need to go home. Take your huge stash of digital hentai next to you with you. But let me pinch those face cheeks first though

Oh it was so cute. See you can never see this kinda shit on a treadmill

No idea, not me, I ain’t no snitch. I’m guessing his parents called once he said something to the effect of “screw you dad! It’s not porn it’s art!” and bailed. But I’d only be guessing

I did have time to consider the situation when I thought it was a chick. She didn’t appear in any visible distress. A high school game had just wrapped up, and she was looking at her phone. So I assumed she was getting a rideshare or waiting for someone to pick her up. And I don’t think based on that I woulda said anything before my last lap

But that was when I thought it was a chick. Obviously that fat (and we talking probably about a tres hundo here) dude is gonna have that computer JACKED off him by day 2. Shoot I was considering doing it and returning any parts that weren’t an upgrade to mine just to teach him a lesson

Welp, this half marathon I:

- Dropped my water bottle and had to stop and turn around and pick it up. I noticed I was literally the only one out of like thousands who had a water bottle in their hands btw. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to? I did feel bad because my klutzy ass caused the people directly behind me to have to slow down. Everyone else either had water bottles on their belt or they only drank the shitty two sips you get from the helpers, spilling out half as you try to drink from a soft floppy cup while running. No thanks, bottle for me

- I hadn’t gone more than like 7-8 miles in training. And only that a few times…

- I forgot to turn runkeeper off for like another minute as I staggered away from the finish line

And I STILL beat last year’s time, WUSSUP

One noteable thing there was this younger girl (20’s or 30’s) with an American flag booty shorts who I passed around mile 6. Then I turned it up in the second half this time. Very very few people passed me in the second half because I went notably faster there than the first half. But somehow this girl did around mile 11. I thought “you fast bitch”. And I couldn’t get ahead again. But I stayed close enough where I got the occasional look at that America booty for the rest of the run

My “Shut up legs, you’re fine” shirt was a big hit again. It was so crowded that at the beginning walking around before the race I only got a handful of compliments and smiles/laughs. But on the walk to my truck after where there was far less people and everyone I passed had time to read it, I got smiles and compliments from almost everyone I passed

Overall, was great. But now I feel kinda sad. Like I do after finishing a great book series or show. Like it’s the end of an era kinda sad. At least till next year. Or maybe it’s just that I’m sick. Because I also feel legit sick. Gonna go lay down

Ty! :)

Oh sure there’s lots in and around where I live because lots (millions+) of people. I think there is another half-m happening next month

But nothing comes close to the size and spectacle of this one. My race had 5,500+ ish competitors (I placed around top 650 overall, top 50 for my age out of 300), and that was down -1,500 competitors from last year (either due to the drug ozempic being a much easier method to fat loss than exercise, and/or the inflation/economy). And pre-covid it used to have like 30-50k competitors. And never will come close to that again, sadly

I agree on the water bottle! Mine also had a mix of Liquid IV and other powdered re-hydrator

But yea I tell myself yknow you can do some of the smaller (less competitors I mean) races this year. I told myself that last year and didn’t. But this year I think I might. I don’t travel much but if the race was a big and pretty enough spectacle, I could see that. Maybe something in CA

What a spectacle! And I bet had better scenery than here. I’m assuming this was pre-covid? Why was crowd stuff so much more epic then?

I used to panic when I was a running noob thinking in my head “GO! People in front, gooo! The race has started and I’m still just standing here. You are costing me time!” not realizing the clock doesn’t start until your tracker crosses the start line. Yea I was dumb :)

But when I put my expected finish time I get like corral 3-4ish. Which I usually ignore and sneak my way up to like the edge of 2 with all the fast people. And I always see some race noobs just arrive late, confused, and move the barrier to hop in wherever they can near the start line. And I’m thinking ma’am no offense but if I can see your back fat hanging out your tank top you should not be here in corral 2…

The more people the merrier though I always think. My favorite part is a little after the start when everyone is able to space out enough to start trucking and you’re just in this huge throng of running people spaced only like 2 feet apart. I feel powerful, like part of an army. And then when it thins out you start to notice race rivals and people who you just happen to sync up with pace wise. I’m competitive but also enjoying myself so if someone passes me I’m like fuck you, I’ll catch up later. But if someone catches up and then stays the same speed I’m like “oh wassup, let’s cruise a while”

I was one of the only ones still wasting energy to air drum my water bottle and phone whenever my music hit too, even at like mile 12 lol

And with that many people it’s fun to be able to people watch as you run. I saw some dude this year running in sandals. Like flip flop sandals. Fast. I was like, are those fucking sandals bro? And on the more grim side, towards the end I did see another dude off the track down on one knee. And I slowed down like uh oh is this guy dying? But I had to keep on

Yeah pre-covid, I think 2015 or 2016. I hate the first 5-10 minutes of bigger races, literally your pace is snared but at the same time most people go out of the gate a little too quick and pacing is important.

Scenery in Newcastle was okay, if you ever visit the north of England its grey and industrial looking in places (from a southerner's perspective). The crowd though were fantastic. Most crowds at running events really get behind the runners which I know I appreciate lol

I once saw a few guys dressed as Roman centurions at a 10k event (no weapons), running in the most flat sandals and actually keeping a good pace but that can't have been good on their feet lol. One day I want to do some kind of fancy dress/cosplay for one :D

Did a bit of research and feel like if I’m going to go for NAD+ boosting, oral NR is an ok way

Probably all a waste of money though, and I was surprised to see that no one method of administration seems to be superior. I would always assume injection would be, since then the digestion process isn’t changing the molecule. Not like I could afford or would want to buy even if I had the $$ some form of injectable NAD booster

But I’ll try an oral or two and see if I notice slight differences. Workout performance and daily energy has been pretty steady and something I’m always paying attention to, so hopefully a small change could be noticed

But other supps I’ve tried and had no qualms about stopping due to no effect. I just wanted to at least try some form of NAD+ by age 41ish

Yea not as much interested in that. I don’t understand a war on inflammation. Inflammation is healing, and in regards to muscles, growth. Let’s wage a war on in-flation instead!

Got my first bottle and started out at 4x the recommended dose (apparently anything under like 2000mg is still safe, so I’ll go up to there). Wouldn’t want to stay at said doseage, but I figure if there’s going to be any kind of effect I feel, it’ll be more apparent at 4x the dose. Course always best if it’s a positive effect…

First off, damn they fast as fuck…

But that rule of you can’t cut someone off isn’t followed at all in amateur races. Especially in the beginning people are cutting each other off like crazy. I’ve seen in Olympic races too where someone cuts in front of someone else to block their access to the lane closest to the inner edge

Race cars are allowed to do it, why can’t race people? If you don’t want him cutting over to block you, don’t let him get ahead in the first place?

Listen, there is a viral GoPro video going around on YouTube. It’s a Ukrainian soldier POV as he fights against a Russian soldier in a gun to grenade to knife fight. The Ukrainian dies. But the backstory was the Russian was I believe stranded alone behind enemy lines and had already killed a few other soldiers. He apparently had 5 kids at home as well, which might have played into why he fought so hard. And I believe he did survive, and is considered a hero now in Russia

I am not going to link the vid here because it was one of the hardest things I have watched in a long time. I only watched to de-sensitize myself against extreme violence in the case I was ever in a similar position. But it is a rough watch, NGL, even if it doesn’t show much blood gore. For any interested, I personally watched a US Marine doing a reaction and commentary on youtube

I'm not going to seek it out, but was it the Uke fighting with a handblade vs a Rusky with a bayoneted rifle?

Essentially a pike. Yeah you lose I have the high ground sorry bud.

Once was enough for me, so my summary is hazy already since it’s been a few days

Ukrainian seemed to be looking for the Russian. Russian was hiding behind the corner wall of a collapsed building, shooting out through a small slot. Ukrainian got lit up as he got close, might have gotten shot, it’s hard to tell, highly likely he was from what I remember

Despite being shot, Ukrainian initially running away spun and rushed the structure with the plan to toss a grenade through the slot. I believe he does, which the Russian sees, and so the Russian runs out from around the corner…

…As the Ukrainian was running up. So the Ukrainian is able to grab the barrel or part of the gun and a wrestling match ensues. The gun I think is dropped and a knife comes out, held by the Russian. A wrestling match over the knife ensues, and I believe the knife changes (cut up) hands several times. At one point someone was holding on to the knife by the blade

Eventually the Russian is able to maneuver the knife away or something and the Ukrainian is bleeding out. But unlike a lot of other deaths he is still super lucid and has not gone into shock, so he calmly asks the Russian to let him die in peace. In so many words, also saying he is hurt bad, hard to breathe, stuff like that. And the Russian obliges and just leaves without finishing the Ukrainian

I didn’t watch to the very end, but heard the Ukranian for sure dies. Both of them fought like absolute G’s. And it was the last dialog at the end that seemed something out of a movie and what made the thing so gut wrenching

Dude tried David Goggin’s daily morning routine and ends up throwing up like 5 times because he’s completely de-conditioned

- Dude quits halfway through the 12 mile run because he’s gone as long as Goggins, time-wise. Pretty sure it’s about the distance not the time. So starts with a fail->quit. Roger that

- I like how when the dude is on a bike he’s like “I’ve already gone further than the run!” Yea no shit you’re on a bike dude. It’s going to be easier. That’s how wheels work

- Dude at the end says something like my takeaway is “why would I ever do this? It’s not fun”…….Why bother going to work when it’s not fun? Why eat vegetables and not donuts when it’s not fun? Why abstain from doing heroin when not doing heroin is not fun? Lol

The only real critique of Goggins from anyone that I personally agree with is that he’s probably on TRT and/or some other PED’s and lying about it

Kk yea I will try next time. My problem with new shoes tends to be, well I have really narrow feet (but long, size 12.5….basically big floppy clown feet), so my shoes tend to get laced so tight the lace rings are basically touching on each side

But not in new shoes. New shoes take a bit to get that tight. So at first I can only get them like 1/2 to 3/4 the distance to touching lace rings, and my feet end up sliding too much side to side when I’m running at any decent clip

Creating matching half dollar sized blisters on the inside of each foot :(

And I went ice skating today again as a date, so I had to re-tape up both blistered feet so I could get my money’s worth and skate the full 2ish hours. But I did make it, and didn’t fall neither. My date fell once, but she’s a lot better than me and can go backwards and stuff being from the cold east coast with their frozen ponds n shit. So she goes fast and takes chances that I don’t, so that’s why

And more of Ernie? Sure, I have a collar with my phone number on him so I might have to edit some, lemme see what I have taken recently on my phone…

So they installed a new streetlight at my gym, because it’s so busy during the day with this crazy damn traffic we have now, without it people would be sitting at that intersection all day. And it’s one of those smart lights that senses any vehicle and instantly gives them the light.

But I don’t need that when I leave the gym at 11pm. There’s still a grip of cars going by, but I can wait for 30 seconds and be able to go. But the smartlight is like “nah, everyone has to stop 50mph to zero both directions and gets to watch this lone dude who just pulled up go by”. Sad for the cat. I’ve always felt an outside cat is a death sentence for the animal depending on where you live

Aus is probably as bad as here, we have lots of hawks, owls, coyotes, in addition to the common stuff everywhere of cars and dogs. Or your cat can just be stuck in a situation in the summer where for some reason it can’t get to shade or water and it melts, this is often what ends up finishing off an injured cat that got away. As a kid I had two separate cats that were outside cats. They never made it to old age. The only comfort is you’re usually left wondering what it was that got them

There’s 2 outside cats by the park I jog by almost every night I got there, they both post up in the same spot. One time I may get a pic of them. I’ve already had to chase two dogs away separate times from going after them, luckily the dog’s owners were around and able to call the dogs back

The last time it was so late at night and without my contacts in I was convinced they were two coyotes. Which I could easily take and was willing to fight. But I realized as I bombed up to them running they were someone’s loose dogs out at 10pm. And their owner was like 40 yard away running over like “why is that crazy dude about to attack my dogs” because he didn’t see the cats they were stalking

Did 6 laps around the park tonight, only had planned 4 but there were both soccer and baseball games of what looked like high schoolers or adults going on aka not scrub little kids that suck. So was able to see some Sportsball action up close as I went by each 6 times

Only problem is I literally HAVE to watch the action of the baseball game. There’s no fence and the edge of the park where I run is like 30 yards from the edge of the (small) outfield. I have to watch out for a crushed hit that sends a round missile of death at my head. For my own safety, I always wish for strikes for both teams batters as I run by. Come onnnn strike!

My cat bro’s were of course out tonight as well. The black one, which I would totally name Guenhwyvar were it mine, likes to sit in stealth mode in shadows of trees or potholes. I’ve almost ran over him a few times. He don’t give a shit

And the reason is other people will be stressed because they have no idea how in control you are or whether you are about to plow into them and take them down the mtn with you tumbling)

I ended up getting like 300+ new replies a day to where I had to just throw my hands up like oh God too many, don’t care I’ve lost interest in this

I’ve always liked how Brooks brand fits on my big, narrow, floppy clown feet. So for the past like 4+ years I been buying the same Ghost (running) and Cascadia (Trail running but I use hiking) over and over as the new models come out. Sucks because I like to support local biz, but my local shoe stores can never keep the old models in stock because everyone wants them cause they’re cheaper. So I’m stuck having to get the latest model where each of those runs about $140 and the store isn’t allowed to fuck with the price. And I burn through them about every year. So one of each/year =$300 on shoes :(

Those nearly barefoot are supposedly the way to go for definitely running. Not hiking where I live though, we supposedly have some of the sharpest rocks in the country and even though my trial runners have a strong thick sole (for a lightweight runner) our rocks even shred it up good. I can’t imagine what a nearly barefoot would feel like hiking

But those are supposedly the best for running, and that is the drawback is that less material tends to wear out quicker. I’ve heard the serious racers will even buy ones that deteriorate so much they are only good for a single race, or maybe only a few. I dunno though, I’m stick in with my Ghost ;)

An example I had used is, if someone came up to you with a spiked ball and chain medieval weapon, and they happened to be an expert in the weapon

But you didn’t know this, and didn’t know them. And they began twirling the weapon around your head, saying “never fear, I am an expert with this and have never made a mistake”

Any rational human being would say “get that the fuck away from my head, I don’t know you or know if any of that is true”

That same sort of concept applies with people, usually younger people because I used to do this too, bombing down the mountain. We don’t know them, don’t know how truly in control they are, so keep the weapon away from my head, so to speak

Serious racers are so serious about a personal best. If you're getting knee/joint pain while running in an older pair of shoes they've probably lost their bounce and you're more likely to pick up an injury.

That feel of a new pair and walking like you're bouncing in low gravity is great but the sheer cost of more than 1-2 good pairs a year adds up :s

You don’t need “science-based” lifting to build a lot of muscle. Train hard, eat right, sleep good, and you can build lots with or without PED’s

But picture someone who only lifts arms, or never lifts legs. How fucking very obviously weird it looks when someone has chicken legs, or little T-Rex arms, or a big chest and a tiny back, or vice-versa

That’s an extreme but between that and a fitness model is everyone else in the middle, a spectrum of lifters with different shaped bodies not defined as much by their genetics as their training

In order to be as aesthetic as possible (which for many is the goal, to look good), you have to hit as many little tiny heads on the muscle as possible. And often that requires some weird as shit movements you never even heard of

If you just stick to doing the same old shoulder press, bench press, squats and curls, sure you’ll look big and boxy. But your muscles won’t “pop” the way that the most aesthetic guys in the gym are. That’s not just PED’s….i mean yea it’s usually INVOLVING PED’s lol….but it’s because those freaks are sitting there for sometimes hours doing 10 different little movements to hit every single part of their shoulder muscle. The front, the tops, the sides, the back. Shit the back of shoulders is an area that is highly noticeable when it comes to what girls like seeing and is an area I would say like 80% of casual gym-go’ers NEVER hit. Not once in their entire lifting career. Because they don’t look up the science of what exercise hits what part of the muscle, and they keep doing their same old squats, bench, and military press

As the science gets upgraded, so do the standards. It isn’t enough to just lift, that’s not going to separate someone from other dudes in the girl’s eyes. They don’t need a lot of muscle, in fact there is a clearly defined “too much” for most women. But the more aesthetic they look, the more they will stand out, even if they only have a small but toned amount of muscle. If it’s shaped well, and it pops, it will look good and tend to draw more eyes

And I know this broscience guy despite his comedy knows and regularly employs far more different types of exercises than most casual lifters to look like he does. PED’s alone won’t give that to anyone. Lift shitty and take lots of PED’s and you’ll get big, and boxy, and kinda ugly

What about Anatoly the Cleaner? He seems to have some method that certainly appears to work.
I havent checked out his methods just watched his silly gotcha vids.

Oh yea he is so popular for a reason. Physique is very good if even on the big side, if someone had muscles shaped like his but 20%-30% smaller I guarantee the girls would still be into it. That’s what all these BIGorexia bro’s don’t get, if they say they are lifting to look good. What is most important in terms of turning heads is shape, not size

But yea very aesthetic and super stronk, and fairly functional strength

Oh and I work around 80% women in my field. And I have heard some when I first met them mention a muscular guy isn’t what they’re into, it’s about intelligence and kindness and yadda yadda. And it is, I believe them. And it is also the socially praised thing to say. I have heard these same girls once they got to know me better say so-and-so celebrity or influencer or even someone we see in public who happens to be physically aesthetic body wise is hot. And I’ll point out, hmm a bit muscular though right? Seems like they go to gym a good amount. Just to remind them what they said before without saying it

So it has taught me there is a subsection of girls who are willing to admit they like an aesthetic fit body

Then there’s a segment who say it’s unimportant and are kinda lying a little

And then there’s the rest that say it’s unimportant and are telling the truth

And we can only guess where the %’s truly fall

Drove there. Stopped at surgery, spoke breifly with receptionist. Sat in waiting room for ≈ 15 mins.
Went in, job done.
Cya later. Even had a light chat about rugby union as he used to be the (volunteer) school team doctor.
What a pain it was. Parking was attrocious. Had to walk past 3 houses to reach it.

As a complete lolocaust, his private practice had a corrugated roof! OMFG. Good call shovel.
Good luck finding a doctor mate.

Pretty fuckin awkward to have to carry in two full sized beach towels if I’m gonna be treadmill running and doing legs at the gym

Normally I’d always run outside but not when it’s likely to rain on me. So have to treadmill run and because I’m auto-timed with the timer in my face of course I have to go fast the entire time and end up getting super sweaty

So the first towel gets fully soaked from the run. Then lifting legs I’m going to continue to sweat. So I need a fresh towel. But in no other scenario should a dude be carrying two damn towels. I look like a weirdo

And ya with that much sweat I have to drink a lot, plus pre-workout caffeine always gives me cottonmouth. I drink so much that I’ll pee 3 times in just the 1.5-2hrs I’m there :/

What a fun time, hadn’t tried the treadmills at this gym ever before

So I get on one near the edge and hit manual and I can’t get the speed above 3.5. So I figure must be a bug, hop on the one next to it. Can’t get the speed above 3.5…

So hey at least it’s an excuse to talk to the super pretty girl up front. So I go up and say “am I stupid, I can’t seem to figure out how to get the speed of your treadmill above 3.5. And she’s already laughing before I can finish, and asks “which ones did you try?” And I said “the two at the end there”

And she goes “those are the only two like that. They were apparently for handicapped people and it was a safety measure”

And I said “wow so of like the 25 treadmills out there I just happened to try just those two. That’s some bad luck…” when I was really thinking handicapped? You mean handi-capable? Differently abled? You dumb bitch

Jk on last part

So I go to the first row, hop on, wow this is smooth, I like the cushion. Going to a fast 7:20m/mi two mile and all of a sudden it shuts off. And when those fuckers shut off from 8.5 to power off I plow into the front like an idiot

So that sucks, fried it? Am I that fat. So I try the one next to it. This one I can only get to 1 mile before it shuts off and I plow into the front again

Fuck this shit I’m out…done with these treadmills

I honestly don't know why we allow it either.

We make gambling illegal, but being fat isn't?

I wouldn't mind if we made a fat tax, enforceable by prison time.

I litreally think the price of diabeties medication should be a billion dollars a shot.

idk, fat tax / criminalisation seems very big government and against individual determinism.

Then again, it is important to protect dignity and human welfare - if abuse of humans is criminalised, why does self-abuse get a freepass?

Personally, I struggle to find sweetners I am happy with. This isn't a problem for me as I drink water, my hot drinks unsweetened and avoid sodas.

However, on the rare occasional I want a soda, perhaps I am treating myself to some spirits n coke, I'd rather it was full sugar and unsweetened. It is a bid sad my enjoyment of an occasional treat is collateral to people who chug 5+ litres of sugar solution a day. Bless them.

I mean we have lots of laws, like it's still illegal to do drugs. And like, the arguments for anti drug laws are literally the effects of saturated fats.

I could see if you wanted to open a fat city in Nevada, allowing it there.

You should be able to be pulled over and ticketed for being fat IMO. (and using a cell phone under the age of 18.. just throw that in there cus bills always have like a bunch of different random laws in them.)

Also it is strange that in the eruope isle in the grocery store, when I look at the food ingredients in food is like milk, sugar, flour.

On a related note, why is vanilla flavour in EVERYTHING american?

Imo it is a mask which covers the quality of the other ingredients.

Recently been getting into Mackie's Icecream*. I think it would be fun to compare ingredients?

Whole Milk (60%), Whipping Cream (21%), Sugar, Milk Solids, Glycerine, Emulsifier (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids), Pasteurised Free Range Eggs, Stabilisers (Sodium Alginate and Guar Gum)

Yea can’t really tax the food because anyone with an eating disorder isn’t going to fix their lifestyle just because junk is more expensive. The type of food matters, but for the very obese the problem is about the portions as much or more as the type

There’s still enough healthy foods that taste good enough for a person with an eating disorder to binge on even if junk weren’t available

A lifestyle tax would be a tough sell to muh freedom Americans. But I always wondered about some kind of tax rebate or free healthcare offered for those to conform to a certain standard of health

But then it gets muddled because how do we determine the standard? BMI is a bad marker, according to BMI a college football player is “obese” from their amount of muscle. vo2max would be great but is difficult to routinely measure, I believe it needs fancy equipment and a treadmill or some kind of workout simulator. Maybe fat caliper clippers or a dexascan to determine fat could work. But there can be a very skinny person, like a crack addict, who is far from healthy and just as much of a drain on healthcare

honestly we should just pass sweeping food ingredient legislation, remove all the petroleum by-products, HFCS, GMOs, anything with the label "contains a bioengineered food product", seed oils, glyphosate residue and whatever other garbage that nature itself did not produce.

Then reevaluate in a couple years and see where we are healthwise.

europeans are human they aren't less likely to overindulge than americans, their food is made with healthier ingredients. my brother has a real gluten problem and gets mad sick if he eats pasta sold in the US. He orders pasta from italy and digests it without any problems at all. I noticed that after a reasonable serving of that pasta I feel full, but if I get pasta from the grocery store here like barilla I can eat the whole box and still feel hungry. Something is preventing the "full" signal from getting to my brain.

I have a suspicion that something is corporate greed.

My vice has been the DQ blizzard choco brownie extreme, medium size. I end up getting it maybe two or 3 times per month. What’s weird is depending on which DQ I get it from can significantly vary the taste but it’s always at least pretty good, to very good

I had gotten one the other night and realized that I had a lot of excess energy and calories afterwards. So I went on a night run at 1am. But I was sick of running the same park especially since in the dead of night the potholes and dog shit are harder to dodge

So I decided to run the empty city. What a trip, I loved it. Ended up doing about a 4-5 mile square down major city street sidewalks. Saw a dude walking his dog and another dude loudly arguing on his phone but otherwise no other people around. Was like I had the city to myself. Very enjoyable, will def do again but only late at night when no one is driving because I hate having to wait at streetlights and breathe car exhaust

But it was a medium sized black dog running down the freeway, some people trying to get it but it ignored everyone and kept going. I had heard for highway hazards call DPS so I try. But

It’s another slippery slope issue. Soda and candy are not poison. Poison is poison. Cigarettes are poison. Candy still has some nutritional value, it is edible

Do we stop there? So cake is still ok? Pie is ok? Or are those next? Junk food addicts are just going to keep switching to the next delicious junky non-banned thing

What about ranch dressing? Pretty unhealthy, should we make the poor eat dry salads or use vinaigrette only? What about juice? Usually not made with real fruit and loaded with sugar, why not ban it? Why not ban granulated sugar itself? That will prevent the poor from being able to as easily bake unhealthy things

I am all for getting America healthy. Just not sure trying to ban only a tiny section of foods for the poor is the way

It’s a ban on just candy and soda. What will that accomplish though? It takes literally like 10 seconds to walk over from the junk food isle to the baked goods isle and grab a few boxes of cookies (which aren’t banned) and then another 10 seconds to walk over to the sports drink isle and get a Powerade instead of a soda (still loaded with sugar)

Person buying them (with food stamps) still ends up just as fat and diabetic. So what did the ban accomplish? It wasn’t even an inconvenience to switch

Now if they banned all candy, ice cream, chips, baked goods, sports drinks, soda, AND juice, all at once. Well now the average fat person on food stamps might go “uh oh, what can I snack on now?” and it might actually become a problem for their bad habit

But just a ban on soda and candy alone seems like a literal waste of time to me. It’s like banning one flavor of ice cream, or just banning Kit Kat bars. It was a waste of of the paper to print it, and a waste of time to read it. It will accomplish nothing

I don't always live the healthiest lifestyle - it is not even 10:30 am and I've already drank two coffees and a cup of black tea, and have taken an early elevensies in the form of a very processed sliced of chocolate cake. I'll frequently skip exercising if I am ill, tired, or the weather/time is inconvenient. Despite that, honestly I'm impressed by the dedication, money and perseverence people are able to put into being fat, I honestly couldn't do it.

It is interesting, from following fitness for like 12ish years now, when it comes to the sport of powerlifting there is one universal complaint. It’s the thing everyone hates and some literally cannot take and it makes them end up quitting

It’s never the training. It’s not them saying “oh my God that workout was too brutal” or “I’m so worried I’ll injure myself”

It’s always the eating. It’s forcing oneself to gorge on huge quantities of food when not hungry. It’s like there is something in our biology that screams internally to stop when we are deliberately gluttonous for long periods of time. It has caused actual mental health issues for competitive powerlifters

I think for the morbidly obese fat people, it’s just that their addiction and dopamine cravings scream even louder
