Default small piece of high quality ore

During the latest patch, Smithing Chisels were removed as they were found to be out of era. However, their removal has highlighted an issue with the apparent absence of a classic source for small pieces of high-quality ore.

Research seems to suggest Runnyeye was a source (the only source?) prior the revamp. Then broken for a short while before being corrected.

Does anyone know more?

They drop off goblins in Permafrost, HH, and I THINK in SolA.

They used to drop off the gobs in RE before the change in the zone but I heard it was taken out of the loot table. It is supposed to be back in next patch I think.

I received an e-mail response about a week ago from a designer at Verant saying the goblins have resumed mining in runnyeye, but I have yet to be able to verify this (killed about 10 goblins, but could have been unlucky).

FYI I believe Runnyeye is the only place to get Small Pieces of HQ Ore (Stackable) the other goblins mentioned above drop large and small bricks, which I believe could be converted to small pieces through a very wastefull process.

Good luck, nad let us know if anyone sees the ore dropping in Runnyeye again.

Hail,
I'm currently trying to get the "piece of high quality ore" that
supposedly drops (rarely) in Runnyeye. I'm a 17th level Halfling Druid,
working on making the Halfling Cultural Sewing Kit.
...
Also: has anyone made the Vale Sewing Kit? Are there any other places
that "Piece of HQ Ore" drops? (I've found Bricks and Blocks in High Hold,
but not Pieces) Can you make Pieces from Bricks or blocks???
Quote:
Runnyeye is the only place to get the small pieces.
They drop from the dazed goblins and up. Levels 17-22 or so.
You would need a full well organized party to hunt them at
your level. The drop is pretty rare only about 1 in 15 will have ore.

I do not think you can make the pieces from the larger bricks
but it may be possible.
Quote:
My thanks to all who replied to this post. As an update, this weekend I was
able to purchase some of the ore (A piece of High Quality Ore) from 2 high
level players (40's I think) who were soloing in Runnyeye. I got 8 pieces
total, enough to make 4 tries at the sewing kit. I failed the first one
(smithing level 103) and have decided to wait until my smithing is up a bit
before trying again. I guess the kit is trivial at around 150.

Smithing - This can only be made by Halfling Smiths, and must be made in the Rivervale forge. Combine two pieces of High Quality Ore and a Flask of Water. The High Quality Ore is occasionally found on Runney Eye goblins. It can also be found on goblins in Permafrost. This becomes trivial at a smithing skill of around 80.
Other link also mentioned thinking permafrost had this, but not sure if it was what people first hand verified

If there was a fix after a patch, some have mentioned it is a rare drop off a rare mob (some say Goblin Janitor?)

The required hq ore was a rare drop from a rare spawn in Runnyeye.
Now the pieces can be chiselled off a small block of hq ore, a drop
in Permafrost. So, I have been beating up gobs in Permafrost and
taking their stuff. However, no ore yet.

cannot find anyone selling the stuff. Dungeons just don't work well
for solo druids, in my opinion.

In regards to 'being broke for a time', came across a May 2001 post mentioning "a goblin janitor" on track in Qeynos but was not findable (stuck in wall). Just thinking out loud but maybe the ore dropped on various goblins up to..March?April? but was going to move to just 'a goblin janitor', but they borked the spawn and it was in wrong zone, fixed and moved June 2001 to runnyeye?

come up on tracking. He seemed to be lodged in the
wall (trackable, but otherwise invisible and

me about him?
Earliest comment from ZAM page is 5/31/2001 on janitor says he appeared 'about a month ago'

Heh, heh...

Funny you should ask that.... (We've been hunting HQ ore).

HQ ore is drop only. HQ small and large blocks drop in Solusek's Eye (Sol A), High Keep, and Permafrost off of goblins. Small pieces of HQ ore drop off of goblins in Runnyeye.

Medium quality ore is available from the merchant next to Miner Hale in High Keep next to the Bank. It is also available in the 2nd mill in Steamfont mountains and at the Ogre merchant camp in the Rathe Mountains.

Only the small bits of ore drop in Runnyeye - and you can only make HQ metal bits (for HQ studs, etc) from them. Don't know what mobs drop it.

HQ bricks of ore only drop in Permafrost, Solusek's Eye and High Keep.

The Vale sewing kit can only be made by Halfling Smiths using the Vale Forge in Rivervale.

The kit requires needle mold, thimble mold, flask water, and high quality bits to make (trivial 162)

High quality bits are made by combining 2x STACKABLE HQ ore in the Vale Forge (trivial 66)

The stackable HQ ore is a rare drop of a Goblin Janitor in Runnyeye (I killed him 40+ times just to get my 2 pieces!)

On the topic of revamps:
Quote:
Example of doing it partly correct: upgrade of runneyeye. HQ pieces of ore (the stacking kind which is used only to make the halfling sewing kit) stopped dropping for about 6-8 months. And since it dropped from a previously common mob, whose spawn became a single mob, only halfling tailors noticed the failure. And until the fan faire in Orlando, all the HQ pieces in the game were harvested before the upgrade.

PS. don't reply to this claiming that HQ ore drops in other dungeons. I know that the non-stacking bricks of ore do indeed drop from any old word dungeon with goblins (with the exception of runnyeye). The PIECES (the ones that stack) were used in exactly 1 recipe in the game and they came from ONLY one mob: the goblin janitor. Who had a broken loot table for 6-8 months.

Re: Fan Faire Brief Note

I was there for about an hour, Daniel Enright was the sole person in the hot seat in the front of the room.

Things he said he would look into:
Drop rate of Swirling mists.
drop rate of HQ pieces of ore.
Making cultural pelts stack.
Adding yew leaves to the foraging table (even he admits that they sometimes spawn at the tops of trees, and was disappointed in the graphic chosen, but that any new picture would have to wait till after the release of SoL).
Some idols are not equipable by the listed races and classes even when worshiping the correct deity: Rallos zek and shadow knights was the example someone gave to him.
...
It's unclear if adjustments to the drop rate were made, but the drop wasn't completely broken based on the numerous accounts between June and October 2001. EQTraders notes the drop off the Goblin Janitor as extremely rare as of Feb 2002.

Great research; thanks for the assist.

I think the only remaining question is when this item was introduced?

I would imagine its September 2000, or sometime between the reports from 03/01.

It has to be Sep2000 or Nov2000

Halfling Cultural tailoring was added in a Nov 15, 2000 patch.

As of about an hour after the servers came back up today, I can tell you that: a) wood elves have mithril leather recipes now, but not only is the book bugged on the servers (Yakatizma provided the details until that can be fixed), but also the recipe for the fier'dal sewing kit is also bugged; b) halflings have cultural leathers as well, but we've not figured out all parts of the recipes yet; c) trivials for fine steel have changed and we don't know new numbers yet (there was a difference in trivials for the various sizes before this patch); d) I've heard nothing on any of the reported new ring combinations or the ornate chain. Updates will be provided as we get them.
However, there was an issue with the combine of the Vale Sewing Kit initially:

It was expected to be fixed in yesterday's 11-hour patch. Comments on Allakhazam's Blacksmithing page date back to before the Sep 2000 tradeskill patch. Here's the scoop! The halfling cultural armor is up, and usable! I had my doubts, but I went to RV, and found a book titled "Leather of the Vale". You need HQ metal bits, a thimble mold, and a needle mold, combined in the Vale forge, which is behind where the bard and Deputy are, by the Inn. The rest, you'll have to get the book to see, but it looks as if we're going to be Tailoring armor, not smithing it.

P.S. Misty acorns are needed for these suits of armor. You can find them on the ground, beyond the wall in Misty thicket.

HQ ore shows up all the times in Halas and everfrost vendors. I suspect mobs in permafrost are dropping them. Vendors are selling them for quite a bit.

I read the book, vail leather, there are still some mysteries, but the book is very plain and complete as to what is new. The new blacksmithing recipe is the halfling specific vale sewing kit, that is made in the halfling specific vale forge that is ouside the Inn just north of the cave to Misty Thicket.

Sewing Kite (made in Vale Forge): High Quality metal bit, needle mold, thimble mold, and flask of water. (will need to search for HQ metal bit! High Hold Keep vendor will be good starting place, hard to believe it is just a dropped item like other HQ ores that are in permafrost).

Note that no recipies have been found for smithing metal halfling armors, only leather. Also of note, in order to make the Halfling Sewing kit needed to make the Vale Leather Armor you need a HQ metal BIT.. look at your recipies for bits.. 2small 'pieces' + water... No small pieces of HQ ore exist nor do HQ bits. So the halfling leather can't even be made, until one or both of these items are found.

LOL, were smiths, we know what pieces and bits are.. cant get skill much past double digits without seeing about 1000 more of these things than one would care too.

Ive read about the plight of the halfling tailors, to my knowledge, and ive spent some time collecting HQ ore, this is NOT dropping right now. Only HQ drop area i havent been to lately is runneyeye, maybe worth a check but i doubt it. I have a gut feeling verant will either put them on a vendor, or on newbie goblin types near HQ drops, like welps in Misty Thicket, or fire gobs in Lavastorm.. just my opinion though.

HQ stands for High Quality.

A HQ metal bit is totally different than a metal bit, and recipe is unknown.

One would guess it would take 2 hq pieces of ore and water, but that would just be guesswork, and no one has found hq pieces of ore.

Now as to metal BLOCKS, and flask of water...
did you mean to say this is recipe for hq metal bits? try it! but only halfling smiths can use the things, to make a vale sewing kit, which is broken, and unusable, because it has too few slots to make anything with.

Last I knew, the recipe yielded a slot slot kit, and all halfling recipies need more slots than that for tailoring. I should check the tailoring discussion group.

Just checked, it has been debugged.

Pending update:

-[Nov2000] Small pieces of high-quality ore may drop from certain goblins in Runnyeye until the zone's revamp. After the revamp, they may drop from goblin janitor.

There is an existing smithing recipe for 3x small piece of high quality ore + 1x water flask = 1 small brick of high quality ore. Is this valid?

That appears to be an out of era recipe.

Compare:
EQTraders - Basic Metalworking (last updated 25 November 2001) vs EQTraders - Basic Metalworking (last updated 5 August 2002)

Likely added with the smithing updates in June 5, 2002:
Quote:
Tradeskills:

* Made some changes to the General Blacksmithing difficulties to make the progression in this trade skill more logical and to allow for more variety in that path.
* Added more than 200 smithing recipes.
* Enchanted Clay is now stackable.
* Sheet of Fiery Metal, Essence of Fire, Imp Blood, and Fiery Temper are now stackable.
* Enchanted HQ Ore can now be worked into rings, jointing, sheets, bricks, and blocks in a standard forge.
