For the most part, that is correct, and it's an ugly truth most americans don't want to face. Americans don't like bad news; usually they'd rather ignore it than face it. So they instead cling to the ever-shrinking proportion of exceptions. Upward mobility in the U.S. is not nearly what most americans tend to think it is, and is significantly worse than that in many other developed nations. It is also worse today than it was for most prior generations--another sign of what I describe as a systemic decline of the nation.
