Definitely not the right genre, but I enjoyed playing earthworm Jim with my sons on some sega, maybe genesis, when they were young. That and mortal kombat

Worm Jim is a series of platform games featuring an earthworm named Jim who wears a robotic suit and battles the forces of evil. The series was created by Doug TenNapel, developed by Shiny Entertainment, and published by Playmates Interactive. The first game in the series was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis console, followed by releases for other platforms such as Super Nintendo, Game Boy, and PC. The game's popularity led to the creation of a cartoon series, action figures, and comic books. Earthworm Jim is known for its unique sense of humor, wacky characters, and challenging gameplay. The franchise has since been dormant for many years, although there have been occasional rumors and reports of new games or adaptations
