Gandalf is also an angel, and has one of the three elven rings of power, the ring of fire. He cannot unleash his full wizard powers because he is an angel, and has the same restriction as the eagles. Instead, he uses the ring of fire to "fire up" the courage of others, which is one reason why he is able to persuade people to go on these perilous quests. He is guiding the people of middle earth to fix the problems since he cannot directly do it himself. The Balrogs are basically corrupted angels and aren't supposed to exist. That is why Gandalf decided to use his full wizard powers against the Balrog specifically. There was no way to stop it from killing the Fellowship otherwise. He does warn the Balrog first that he is an angel, which is his famous "you shall not pass" speech. Perhaps he was hoping to avoid conflict if the Balrog knew he was a serious threat.

Galadriel is immortal but low HP and no divine aura. One arrow would have ended her and she wasn't willing to risk her immortality for some bullshit ringwar that happens every few thousand years.

![]() The real plot hole is not how to return the ring. It is the idea of returning the ring:the ring that will grant Sauron’s will to dominate and abilities to name great curses to those in possession of it.
Geography has it’s own sentience in Middle Earth. Mountains are malevolent, forests are perfidious. Mount Doom must surely be worst of all. A mountain whose roots creep deep and can reach into the fiery and shadowy underworlds (in which many terrible horrors reside). So casting the ring into mount doom will not destroy it. No. It will provide that volcano with Sauron’s power. And an army of horrors older than time, with a reach across all of Middle Earth.

![]() Two Towers is by far the best of the trilogy imo. Fellowship sets everything up great and gets you invested but honestly it gets a bit plodding during that long fight in the woods at the end (though the boromir death scene still gets the feels).
RoTK was just sensory overload when I saw it and the giant armies just seemed too over the top huge to be believable. Plus then none of it matters cause the invincible ghost army just wipes everyone out in two seconds. Anticlimactic. Two towers though is amazing all the way through. The epic battle is appropriately scaled, that final scene with gandalph riding the horse down the mountainside is just gorgeously executed. Theodin's storyline is super epic and heartbreaking when gandalf frees him and he realizes his son is dead. It's by far the most mature of the three films. Oh also best original score ever, by a mile. Howard Shore killed it completely, the format is now won.

![]() Also random thought: Fellowship came out in theaters only a couple months after 9\11, which makes the whole trilogy post-9\11. For some reason I could have sworn fellowship came out earlier than that, but nope, Dec 2001. After the horrifying spectacle of 9\11, the spectacle of a fully live-action LOTR trilogy was very welcome I think.
