The difference I have found between cal and other states is pretty simple:
In a bunch of states you can just leave your car abandoned on the side of the raod and it will stay there for like weeks or months. In California they will auction your car and fine you $1,000 before you can return with your gas canister. Now, this makes for a clean and beautiful state... yes... but on the other hand, it does put a lot of undue stress on the poors. And so, yeah, life in California, in general is a higher quality in the sense that the belagio is a better hotel than the flamingo... But can the poors stay at the Bellagio? No. So in other ways, it's kind of shitty and unfair.

This study doesnt take all the factors into account.
It doesnt tak about how prossicution in SF against misdermenors was a slap on the wrist. It went into effect for one reason, to reduce the arrests because of an overcrowded prison problem. Police, have directives given to them by the cheif, if the court is not prosicuting petty theft, becaues its trying to use prop 47 to do what prop 47 was intended to do, the police department moves to different issues, and they MOVED AWAY from caring about petty theft like car break ins. Shop lifting. I KNow this because I was into graphiti and everyone I knew was a criminal and they stole a ton of shit to do it and even white graph kids with trustfund were like "FUC IT! YOLO!" let alone the exploding homeless population, that the police told me "since we're not throwing them in jail, there is nothing we can do so you need to just be more vigilant about where you park your car"

I was in a courtroom in san francico once and had the pleasure of watching matt Gonzalez defending someone and the kid got off in 20 seconds.
Matt Gonzalez is a super bad ass and his ability to be a super badass was not why the kid got off, the kid got off because the court was just not prosicuting those types of cases after prop 47 But I mention matt gonzolez because if you dont know who matt Gonzalez then you dont know anything about crime in SF

Part of me wonders if the tech boom attracted more crime to SF, but the part of me that knows the police literally were just not giving a crap about petty theft and told me to just get used to it was a bigger cause.
I love sf I miss it and lived there for a long time, but I cant aford it, and nobody has ever, ever, EVER broken into someone's car getting onto the 80 while it was stuck in trafic until whatever is happening to that city right now. anyone who loves sf, how can you tell me that this is the city you are used to? SOMETHING is definitely up idk if THAT one is to blame for it, but I think the overall lax policing + tech boom + pandemic is why crime is off the rails in SF But it is totally off the rails right now and it's a lie to say it isnt. Prop 47 is definitely (in part) to blame, if at the very least because it changed the direction of the police departments goals.
