I'd be down for 2 years of Kunark. That way you can cycle your addicts. First wave of addicts are the hardcores who crush it for the first 4-6 months. Most of those burn out. Rinse and repeat and then 2 years down the line, pretty much everyone is ready to move on!

That's 993 days. On the next server once your character reaches day 993 of their creation you are warned and at midnight that day you are kicked off the server and your character deleted.

This is what needed to happen on P99.
Damn D! Thats a great idea! Also on live back then I think if you didnt play for what...4 months? you toon got deleted? Or was it one year?

Pretty sure they never purged characters prior to me quitting (LDoN era), ie. before free to play. Honestly I don't think they even purged level 1s, except maybe completely nekid level 1s (and even then I never heard of it happening). I would start level 1 alts and then get bored and forget about them for months or years at a time, but I don't remember ever having any of them deleted.

Fiscally Verant had zero reason to purge accounts. The only way they could make more money from purging is if there were people who said "I won't give Verant my $10/month because I can't have some name (that is being taken by a level one toon)." How many gamers have you heard of who refused to play any game because they couldn't get the handle they wanted?

At the same time, how many people did you know who stopped playing, and then came back months or years later (quite possibly with a desire to play a new toon)? That describes almost everyone on this server right? If Verant purged characters they'd be flushing money down the toilet, because anyone who came back and found their toons missing was likely to cancel their subscription.

This patch note is from 8/9/2000

Quote:
Time has come to do some cleanup on character data across the servers. On August 23rd (Pacific), we will be doing a system-wide cleanup of level 1 characters. All level 1 characters that have that have not been played within 30 days from the date of the purge will be deleted. As GMs will not be able to restore any characters that are deleted, please be certain to log in any level 1 characters that you wish to keep prior to the purge.
followed by this one on 8/23/2000

Quote:
We've decided to postpone the previously announced purging of level 1 characters that had not been played in the past 30 days. Should we reschedule this process in the future, we will again give fair warning prior to implementing the purge.
And finally this one on 9/19/2000 and 9/28/2000

Quote:
The Level 1 character purge announced several weeks ago will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at 7:00am PST (GMT-7). Any level 1 characters that haven't been played within the previous 30 days will be deleted. If you wish to keep any level 1 characters that you may have, please log in and play them between now and 9/27.

The Level 1 character purge has been completed. All level 1 characters that have not been played within the past 30 days have been deleted.

The thought of this ever happening if a new server ever launched is just wow 😮

Obvious answer; Join Auld Lange. the population and stability of the server is its main asset. A reset or new server is dangerous proposition because if half the population left server would be dead and classic over.

You have to deal with "old server" problems, because the alternative is playing alone on a dead server or 20 boxxing with the rest of the eq vets.

Ahhh, thanks for posting that Llandris. That happened pre-Velious, and I didn't start until Velious, so that explains why I never heard of the wipe.

They can't start a new server till they finish the first one. simple as that.

aka Blue/Red still have content updates to roll out.
Submit those bug reports, folks!

Something that I've really become aware of as I've started playing again, that speaks to I guess OP's point, is that everywhere you are leveling up, there are people with their level 60 cleric / enchanter alts logged nearby, constantly going around buffing people and 96% ressing them.

This makes all the content leveling up infinitely easier, and eliminates any consequence to death. The danger and the risk are a huge part of what made Classic EQ what is was.

Further, there are a million people available to port you at any time, anywhere, largely eliminating your need to run anywhere or take boats. This has the effect of vastly shrinking the world and causing people to avoid a lot of the traveling that also made this game what it was.

It would be nice if there was a way to start a fresh server while still guaranteeing a similar population level. I also agree with some of what other posters said, that bringing in new players who have never played EQ before would be a huge part of recreating the experience. I wonder if P99 is allowed to advertise, or if they would have an issue with people taking out ads on their behalf?
