It's human nature to try and foster a relationship with authority figures if you believe it can garner you an advantage over others. The real fault lies with the staff who are far too involved with the player base. Taking on a GM/Guide role is a thankless job, this is known, unfortunately far too many of the staff want the thanks and fame that ultimately undermines their effectiveness.

Why wouldn't (couldn't) you produce the crown when you were asked to show that you still had it? That happened while you were guilded. As for the proof, the person you sold it to ratted you out by name without provocation.
