The whole time I was playing on THJ I was like, this is far to popular.

Not to mention the myrade of youtube videos that were titled, DBG sucks THJ is amazing! DBG can't make good games, THJ can for FREE! WOO!!!

that shit is hugely damaging to the investment the investment bank made purchasing DBG.

Or so they think, personally I think how they reacted is far far far more harmful.

The whinefest from THJ's community is kind of amusing. Their collective immaturity is really on full display. Their server was a reckless exercise in copyright infringement and wanton greed from the owners, and they've still managed to concoct an alternate reality where DBG are being evil bullies for taking them down. The "how dare they!" mentality is so irrational.

Not only was it a clear-cut case of copyright infringement, DBG also had to take action. Copyright abandonment is a thing. If you don't protect your IP when someone makes meaningful money by infringing upon it, the court can decide that you've forfeited ownership of it. On top of that, as a publicly traded company, they could face lawsuits from their shareholders if they hadn't taken action. You have a fiduciary duty (i.e. legal obligation) to protect your shareholders' interests to the best of your ability, and for a reasonably large industry player like DBG's parent company, "the best of your ability" certainly includes a slam-dunk lawsuit against the infringing party. In short, DBG didn't really have a choice.

It was always cringeworthy how the THJ community had convinced itself that this was the best and truest way to experience Everquest. The fact is that it was an ultra-ezmode version of the game that spat on every facet of the spirit of Everquest, from the social element to the intended challenge involved in obtaining rewards. Everything soloable, characters wildly overpowered, buying BIS gear in the bazaar, accessing all content by hailing an NPC in the hub, etc. It was like Everquest for the most casual of casuals, bereft of everything that makes Everquest what it is. It's like playing the StarCraft campaign with cheat codes and then patting yourself on the back for winning.

From what I saw, nothing in the game, outside of the graphics and lore, resembled EQ in the slightest. Anybody who claims otherwise is being extremely disingenuous. The "EQ for people who have time constraints" line is a real thorn in my side. It is not EQ at all. It is a new game, built on EQ artwork and lore.

A large part of me dislikes how the THJ devs operated here. They clearly created a system where people felt obliged to spend tons of money in order to fast-track themselves (in a game that's already on fast-track).

The devs claimed they were doing it out of the spirit of EQ - while stripping away the ONE thing that classic EQ was leaps and bounds above all other MMO competitors - the REQUIREMENT TO TEAM UP TO GET ANYTHING DONE.

Seriously, these jokers made bank running a pay-to-win easy-mode EQ-in-name-only server - and claimed to be "just fans" .

To all those who spent all that money on the special tokens or whatever: Microtransactions are bad, mmmkay?

I had fun killing raid targets I'd not seen since 2000/2001~, complete casual on p99 and rarely grouped, went to a pick-up raid once or twice, so it was a nice nostalgia berry liquid explosion to go on a dragon killing world tour to unlock the expansions.

Yeah, it combines my favorite game (everquest) with a different playstyle, that still feels like everquest.

Also I was able to dress up a rogue in that dark black quest armor from Sol Ro for necros, and wear a dark elf custom crown, and glamor my weapons to be 2 samurai swords.

^ to daybreaks point though, you can do that on a live server while paying them or even not. anyone that ever payed a sub to EQ if you still remember your login details is a grandfathered tier'd "silver" account which lets you level up to 85, keep whatever AAs you had or accquire like 2,000 of them

you can solo way past PoP as a unkillable God, THJ was most certainly competition for people looking to do that.
