Backpacks only carry items up to large - be aware with 8 backpacks you will be unable to carry any giant items you find. Also consider you’re limited in carry capacity by strength as well as slots. You can’t put bags in bags. Iirc a large sewing kit can be used as a container for giant items?

What Jimjam said, but also inventory slots can hold clickable items. For instance, every non-Bard will want boots that increase run speed (Journeyman's Boots for most; Shaman get a faster version).

You can wear the boots, but most right-click them from inventory instead, because they have bad stats. Other inventory-clickable items include potions, root nets, or a Mage focus item (only Mages can equip them, but other pet classes can still use them from inventory).

On my characters I tend to use six bags, or rarely seven. I always leave a slot for my SoW potion or run speed boots, and typically I have a second clicky in another slot. With ten-slot bags that still lets me hold sixty items, which is usually plenty.

I just got the free backpack from that Curscale Armor Quest NPC and bought 3 additional backpacks from a vendor. Now I have 4 backpacks and no money.
Aim for carrying six or seven bags. Also get in the habit of looting absolutely everything off every creature you kill, then go and sell those items to the vendor. Make note of which fetch only a few copper pieces and which are worth several gold, then prioritize the latter in your hunting. Things like poison venom sacs, Iksar Targ shields and the "cracked staff" are much more valuable to vendors than a piece of spiderling silk, for example. Once you're able to start regularly vendoring those type of items, you should start acquiring a decent enough amount of platinum to allow you to level and buy all the spells, food and bags you need.

So six large sewing kits is the best inventory management strat? Today I found three Iksar Targ Shields got over 3 platinum now... And a backpack full of bloodwater and earthworm munchs...

Are six large sewing kits really the best item to carry items in your inventory?

They are the cheapest way to get as many Giant-sized slots as possible. More slots means fewer trips back to town to sell ... which means more time leveling and looting.

That being said, the large sewing kit only holds 8 items, weighs 3 stone, and has no weight reduction. Eevntually you can do better.

For instance, the Shralok Pack also holds 8 Giant items, but it only weighs 0.4 stone, and reduces the weight of items placed inside by 25%. Depending on your class, you can likely farm these packs yourself at level 22 or 23.

But there are lots of bags: https://wiki.project1999.com/Bags. The "gold standard" is the Bag of the Tinkers, with 10 giant slots, 1.0 stone weight, 100% weight reduction (although raiders can acquire an even lighter version).

I find a single large sewing kit is enough giant slots. Things like backpacks or quest combiners will give you enough other slots. I’d just see how you go - running out of slots vs encumberance changes a lot depending on gear, str, etc.

Im assuming you’re staying in or around cabilis.

4-6 backpacks is fine early on. Later, buy or camp shralok packs. Then there's bags in Lower Guk and Sol B that you can camp in your 40s.

If you find yourself looting a bunch of Giant items that don't fit in backpacks, then maybe buy a sewing kit.

Yeah only giant items I came across from memory is rusty halberds, that undead cyclops skull for brewing and an OT hammer? I'm not saying they're the only ones but this isn't a big deal. I carry a single shralock pack for OT hammer, problem solved. Worst case scenario you'll have to let a few 2gp halberds rot.

You can totally start with Rogue if that’s what you’re drawn to. It’ll just be a bit tougher solo, especially early on—but not impossible. I did something similar and yeah, it was rough at first, but it got a lot more fun once I figured out how to work around the limitations (and got some decent gear).
