Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Democracy about letting the people choose their leader?

It's kind of weird when the people choose their leader, and then a shadowy cabal of party members say "Fuck you" and choose something different.

Is that Democracy? I'm no good with politics. Is that what they refer to as "democracy"?
