It was only a matter of time until this happened, been hearing about excessive congestion and understaffed ATC for a long time. Hear about near misses once every couple months, there was a big NYT article on it a year or two ago.
Blaming either Biden or Trump is a pretty dipshit, lizard-brained thing to do in this case. Biden was an empty chair, it was doubtful his handlers were able to interrupt enough naps to get him to look into this, and Trump's fed-firing blitz might have caused some acute chaos, but ultimately it's not like the POTUS office has a magical lever that can be pulled from the resolute desk to manage an intricate system like atc. But its easier for stupid people to think, TRUMP = BAD, PLANE CRASH = BAD, TRUMP = PLANE CRASH, WORLD = SIMPLE, MY TEAM = GOOD. We'll know exactly what went wrong within the next few years (or maybe not, given the inspector generals were fired), but by then nobody will care or pay attention. Fire-at-the-hip speculation at this point looks like the helicopter pilot was terrible. ATC told him to go behind the plane, and he turned RIGHT (in front of the plane, and toward the airport) instead of left. But when that command was given, the landing plane was on an entirely different vector than when it was struck, so it may have been confusing.

Seconds are critical when it comes to giving and receiving flight instructions from ATC
I have watched probably 15ish different videos of my boy Hoover on the Pilot Debrief channel go over tragic deaths of usually small planes Makes me never want to go into one of those small planes ever lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=

Oh it looks like Hoover did a vid on the Washington crash already too, shorter than his usual ones though

It was totally an interdimensional demon orb UAP antigravitational egg that crashed into the helicopter and the airplane!

ATC being understaffed due to DEI quotas is certainly a possibility; if you must hire X number of whatever demographic you will necessarily have to pass over qualified candidates who don't check whatever box you're being asked to select for. But I think people sometimes forget there isn't an infinite supply of people who are capable and willing to study something really hard and actually do it. Sure remove the DEI factor, I think that's a wise thing to do, but it has no impact on how many total people apply for the job in the first place.
Same problem with healthcare debates- good doctors don't just fall out of the sky.

If a black guy and a white guy both apply for the same opening, and they have absolutely equal credentials, I can get on board with giving it to the black guy on the grounds of historical marginalization yada yada. The problem is quotas, and the attendant punishments imposed by not filling them, especially when it comes to critically important jobs that other people's lives depend on. There is already a critically low amount of people to fill such roles, and arbitrarily shrinking that already tiny hiring pool because of some half baked DEI horseshit does not help.

But we should be empowering kids not adults. Giving KIDS the keys to the future. Get them to qualify themselves by working for it. Not giving unqualified adults the keys to the office.
