Cause they aren't? Most academics and scientists you're exposed to if you watch msnbc all day are, no doubt. And since the left controls literally almost every institution, academics and scientists who are right leaning censor themselves.

I believe some professions inherently tend to lean one way or the other due to the nature of said profession and the temperament of the folks it'll attract. Scientific fields, education, etc have a tendency to veer left because those fields are all about expanding horizons and pushing boundries. Fields like accounting, civil engineering, and such have a tendency to veer conservative because there's a great emphasis on sticking with what's known to work and not rocking the boat or running costs up too much.

That's fine. In all cases integrity matters most, not political leaning. A liberal professor is not an issue. A professor of any political persuasion who demands his students follow his own idealogy or who pushes propaganda over truth, that is a problem.

I've worked with department heads and professors from a variety of schools for past work, they vary, as do most groups of people.

Good teachers can teach a subject without coloring it too much with their own beliefs. I think most of us could summon examples of both good and bad teachers.

Same. It's not a bunch of clones. That being said I do think some (most) professions have a tendency to veer one way or the other due to who'll be attracted to a given type of field. There's a definitely a left-lean in education, but that doesn't bug me in and of itself. Yeah, always have to guard against extremism, but that's just as true of the other side as well since that side's fundies would gladly teach the bible as incontrovertable fact (and they try to get it legislated from time to time). Fundamentalism and zealotry is the enemy of liberty and free thought regardless what side it crops up on.

(edit) a "lean" doesn't need to mean it's 99-1 in the sort of binary black-and-white way internet discussions often gravitate towards. 60-40 is still a pronounced lean.
