Well, that sucks. I admit, I was wondering if I would end up experiencing anything similar leveling up as a rogue in Auld Lang Syne, but I've been fortunate to have generally positive experiences. I've had some people suggest I get cheap gear upgrades or try to give me things when I was lower level, but noone has kicked me from a group or complained when I can't put out as much damage as my more fully geared counterparts.

I've found that playing with things I've found myself is super fun. Just upgraded my oldest piece of gear last night, an alligator tooth earring, with a blue diamond electrum earring I got from a guild group camping the Allizewsaur. Most of my gear has a fun story behind how I got it, whether its my Polar Bear Cloak I got after spending an hour and a half skulking around everfrost in sneak while trying to find Karg Icebear at level 10 (and subsequently being eaten by a cat during the turn in), or my gold star ruby ring I got at level 24 by pickpocketing a star ruby off a seafury cyclops and giving it to a guild jewelcrafter to enchant for me.

Keep on playing naked, OP!

I find this amusing because the gear you describe is effectively level-appropriate for level 12. I suspect some of the newer P99 generation who started during Kunark or later have forgotten (or never knew) what classic leveling means. Use patchwork or leather up to the mid teens with cheap vendor-bought weapons (2-6PP). If you can finish a set of banded by about 14-15 or so, you're doing good and should also be able to afford a combine weapon by then. Banded into the low 20's when you can obtain bronze...then bronze up till you can get quest armor or other similar drops (likely during the 30's).

Im new to the server and have found people to be very helpful and generous, but im still wearing decaying skeleton cloth drops in 6 slots at level 17. Im not sure how someone would expect you to acquire better gear under the circumstances. Most everything earned is required for spell purchases.

Yup! From what I could tell sifting through forum posts trying to figure out what I can do with pickpocketing, the code has changed a few times over the years. From what I've been able to determine, the current implementation can pickpocket giant, humanoid or werewolf body types level 45 and under to steal anything that isn't NODROP, Magic or a wielded weapon (although I think there's a bug that stops you from taking non-coins off things under level 20). Seafuries are 42 and under and giant body type, so you can totally sneak along behind them and take their stuff.

Tricky parts were finding a time when people weren't actively killing them, since I don't pick off engaged targets, and having SOW so I was fast enough to chase them down with sneak on, since they tend to wander. Also, the risk of death on a failed pick since there's nowhere to run, but overall it was an exciting treasure hunting expedition at level 24. Got a Sapphire and a Star Ruby out of it before I decided to stop pushing my luck, was like 1/3 of my money at that point in time.

I might try it again now that I'm high enough level that I can likely root poison them and log on a failed pick, but it would almost be easier to just get a partner and kill that at this point or group somewhere else with good plat drops.

Slight correction, maximum level for pickpocketing should be 45 or player level -5, from what I've read. I'm not to 51 yet, so haven't been able to test that myself.

Nice! I'll have to go put Borgnach on Seafury Island and teach the world what it means to be a true rogue
