CCNA needs to be renewed every 2-3 years is this still the case? I got my Network+ 10 years ago that was easy as hell but I'm not a network engineer.

This is an attempt to broaden my horizons, not find a career =P I figure it would be a good complement to my programming experience, and I already have touched a lot of network topics in my experience.

I'm doing this so I can say to you dumb motherfuckers that I passed this shit after a week of preparation and call you all stupid.

Huge push right now for either programmers with some solid network skills, or network eng with some solid programming skills. I think this field is going to open up into huge money. You could be lazy and still make over 100k remotely. "The dream"

Big thing I see now is VMware and storage but unless you're some kind of genius or you have lots of years of IT experience there's no way you are going to land a real job doing any of these things. If you want to go to school or pass an exam to make money I suggest another field.

I work for a Fortune 100 company, that would hire someone with just a CCNA, and a general knowledge of computers. These clowns have no idea what they are talking about.

P.S. It's shitty to troll real life advice type post. I can't tell if some of you guys are trolls, or just dumbasses talking out your ass though.

I should clarify this entry level job is for a network eng that pays 65k + bonus.

You sound like a IT warm body. Would never allow someone like that unless they are making entry level money - anyone can get a CCNA and have general computer knowledge. Probably have a bunch of incompetent IT workers in your fortune 100 company. warm body manager. are you technical?

Kergan in your opinion, if I went into the CCNA R&S Lab Exam with no hands on experience but lots of packet tracer experience, what would be my biggest problems? What's that exam like?
hehe

But seriously, with no hands on experience you won't be impacted too much on the CCNA exam. It helps for sure, but it is mostly testing you on facts. Like you'll get a question that asks what routing protocol has an administrative distance of 90 and give you EIGRP, BGP, OSPF and RIP as choices. In the real world if you didn't know you'd spend 5 seconds googling it.

You'll probably struggle a little more than a more experienced person at the labs, but it is possible you don't get a lab at all or just 1. Or you could get 3. The labs you go in and have to actually configure a simulated router and/or switch. The tasks are really simple but if you've never actually logged into gear and played around before you won't know the exact commands and shit, but usually the help stuff is available.

So in your study spend a little extra time on the lab scenarios and how to recognize which scenario you got if one pops up.

Other thing I will say is watch your time. Some exams you can go back to a previous question (like M$ exams for example), but with Cisco ones once you click next it's done. People taking the CCNA for the first time often run out of time - I think its either 90 minutes or 2 hours for 60-80 questions depending on how many simlets, drag and drops and labs you get.

3 years initially, then individual CCNP exams and some other things will renew it for 2 years each one you pass. If you want to keep going with certifications it helps to sorta plan it out, because a P level exam will renew any A level exams, but A levels wont renew P levels, etc.

Minneapolis is considered one of the better cities in the country for IT positions. For example, Robert Half Technology rates it as plus modifier for pay (so you make more than average money doing the same job in Minneapolis). There are a lot of huge companies HQ'd there like 3M, Best Buy and Target to name a few.
