Just finished the first two books in Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles.

I got almost the same feeling after reading these as when I finished reading the first few WoT or ASOIAF books. Really looking forward to the 3rd and final book when it comes out in a few months.

Oh God I had to finish WOT just because I had too much invested.

Lol

Quit while your ahead

I did audiobooks, I couldn't imagine reading hundreds of pages of woman arguing, talking about the lace on their dresses and tugging braids

Only time audiobooks are acceptable are if you're taking a long car trip, or if you're blind imo. Personally i find the physical act of reading enjoyable and it ruins it for me when i hear some narrator doing character voices and stuff.

I read so freaking much tech stuff and text books for school.
I enjoy zoning out to a good audiobook to relax

So, anyways... I have a serious question for the busy people who use audiobooks for reasons of convenience and/or lack of free time to sit down with a book... If you suddenly had more time and it didn't make a difference in your life either way, which method would you prefer the most? Old-school or audiobook?

I have yet to try the audiobook thing. I'm concerned that there is too much potential for stories that I love to become corny and ridiculous with someone reading every word aloud while changing character voices, playing out dramatic scenes, etc... (They do change character voices, right? Cuz I really don't know. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.])

I also wonder if audiobooks ever make a listener feel awkward during certain stories. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

It really depends on the reader. Neuromancer is read by William Gibson himself and i really enjoyed it. It has a music for different scenes, electronic music, well done. Same with the dark tower audio book. Some are just a robot reader and those are really bad, and i had to stop the audio book version of Menzoberanzzan because the reader was unbearable. Kinda depends how much effort was put into it.

Man it can not be stressed enough how much of a difference the reader makes when it comes to audiobooks. The Wheel of Time has some of the best readers (they're a husband and wife pair who switch out who's reading depending on if the chapter is from the perspective of a man or woman) I've ever listened to and that's literally the only way I can get through the middle books in the series anymore.
