I think all the fundamental nerd arenas have the same level of sperglord tbh
Go to an MTG tournament, warhammer fantasy tabletop convention, big dnd get together... the only difference is the age of the players usually. The only truly annoying thing about them (besides the smells) is the overly immersed, my way or the highway attitude that a shit ton of them have.

Now I'm confused, though. Why would you go play in a big tournament and expect it to be non-competitive? Just play with your friends, or go to pre-releases.

These days it's certainly unrealistic to ask for any amount of good sportsmanship in anything higher level then FNM, but it doesn't have to be that way and it definitely wasn't that way in the past.

I'm the same way on P99. I raided hardcore for a few months in 2010. Now I'm very casual. That's actually why I got so pissed at BDA. Chest sold it to me as a casual friendly guild and then there was pressure to poopsock. Count me out of that crap. I find both experiences fun, but playing any game hardcore takes too much time to be sustainable. I only played tournament Magic as long as I did (2-3 years) because my girlfriend at the time liked to play tournaments, especially draft. I quit when she got tired of it.
