Many roads lack sidewalks in America, you walk on the road or the shoulder if you walk. Lawns are typically private property, though some folks will let kids pass through their lawns without issue.

I'm glad we have sidewalks around here, at least.

I wasn't alive in the 40's, personally. I try not to step foot in LA either. Place is a shithole.

There are a lot of neighborhoods that don't have sidewalks though, even today. In those cases, you just walk along the edge of the road. Being careful not to drop your hamburger or AR-15 while you walk.
