Well I'm not doubting TMO's quick defense of their play times and I'm not going to assume anything about their living, social, or work situations because in any case we should all remember the truth will be never be revealed.

That being said, it would make sense if upper-middle class (likely not "rich", more below) people played this game to raid heavily. Given TMO's borderline obsession with affirming themselves as "the best" it's obvious they have a great need to feel above others. When one considers the stressful nature and social politics of middle to upper-middle class jobs, P1999 provides an outlet where they can become irresponsible teenagers once again and feel like they "own" the world. The protective veil of the internet only catalyzes this transformation. "Rich" people likely do not play this game unless they suffer from an intense inferiority complex and need a window to vent their frustrations.

If P1999 didn't fulfill a great need, people wouldn't be willing to sacrifice their time on a whim to log into a game and lie to themselves about following strategies established years and years ago to win pixels to parade around, referring to them as "the best".

Well my analysis is done. Let's see if I'll be ripped apart or ignored this time.

most competitive people play to be the best, who wants to be the mediocre guy in a game?

If you think 10-20mins out of a day randomly is some huge time sink, you have a very shitty life.

Obsession. You could literally put everyone on all of p99 under the label of obsessive. Be it at being the best or hating on people who want to be the best to all sorts of other little titles.

Not everyone has to lie to themselves to enjoy logging in to kill something.

what strategy? This is everquest, ya nerd.

Someone is always going to be the best, no matter how many shitty people are playing, someone else will be shittier and jealous they suck and lack the basic comprehension needed to realize they just suck and make up excuses to seem less sucky.

Enjoy thinking up ways to demean and degrade people who play the game and want to be considered the best. There are millions of other haters in the world who do the exact same thing as you while also living shitty unimportant lives and have nothing else better to do but think of ways other people suck at life as much as you.

I can understand the point you're trying to make but can also assure you that the blanket type of categorization you're providing isn't gonna fly, and that's with out speaking on anyone else's behalf in the guild which I could easily do. I myself am 39, college educated with a career that pays well above an average income and I'll leave it at that. For me, EQ is now what is was back in 1999. Time away from work/kids/woman/stress and it's "me time" to do as I please and enjoy one of the best hobbies ever created. And for me, with my competitive nature, it's not enjoyable to be in a casual guild just playing and not competing in end game raiding.

if you're looking for a common thread in TMO members, that's what you'll find. Not a need to fill a void irl, but people that not only enjoy EQ, but wouldn't enjoy EQ without end game competition. It's not easy making VD and IB/TR your bitch, but the joy in the game is in doing so. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

FUCK! I'll admit, I'm just like you guys in TMO. I love to be the best! I just wish your guild was on red so I could crush your skulls in while taking your loot.

I refuse to get into a guild to compete with you guys (which would be fun) only so that we can have our little shitty wars of trying to leapfrog over each other and see who can stay online the longest (which would not be fun).

IMO, TMO moves to red, I join you guys, and we destroy Nihilum in our quest to be the best.

Who's with me! *fist pump!*

Oh they're defending themselves. Let's see,

This fella Autotune responding line by line - he really lives in his own confused world that he desperately needs to defend.

This guy fischsemmel lives in denial.

Rordell is the type I was pinpointing in my post. Wife, kids, (stressful) career that pays well but likely has to kiss some ass. P1999 fills the void that allows him to be irresponsible and demeaning to others because he can't be that guy in real life. No shame in that, really - I'm glad you found an outlet. Some people burn it off at the gym playing basketball or a quiet game of chess - anything to feel like the king of the sandbox.

Guess not everyone is aware that people outside of the US play? 9 am to you is just that, 9 am to you; it's prime playtime for other folks out there in the big, flat world.
