religion was the party of the people who were against the kings and emperors and did every mass purge in history.

what group is against kings and emperors now again?

maybe im misremembering my youth - but do you remember every day people identifying as a political party pre-Social media? in my entire family, i had 4 uncles (3 brothers, and 1 brother-in-law) on my mom's side that were political - and nobody else in my family ever talked about any of it. 2 of the brothers were actually involved in politics, and the other 2 were just bored middle aged guys.

my 4 uncles used to argue every Thanksgiving and other family get-together after the regular discussions died down. it was the full spectrum, too. 1 Marxist, 1 Neo-Liberal, 1 Republican and 1 Libertarian all going at it. my 5th uncle used to sit with me and say "they're all full of shit and they all think they're right. none of this shit matters".

yeah organized religion really dropped the ball on this, people love dogma and lore they just require good writing and PR to be recruited these days

just look at the millions obsessed with popular franchises like star wars, wh40k, harry potter and idol worship taylor swift, beyonce

very cult like and proto religious so people found substitutes

If you're willing to go out on the street and yell about your religion you're a delusional freak (politics included).

I just don't get why atheists would agree with me 110% up until the part I said (politics included).

Protests are to make people feel good that they are not alone, that other people are aligned and think the same, not to change people's way of thinking. So if the metric of success of a protest is the change it effectuated then I would agree they are useless (why I never have or will participate in one). If the metric is how warm and fuzzy it makes you feel that your brain is tuned the same way as hundreds of other people than they are likely very effective.

I had an epiphany the other day that maybe my generation completely missed the mark on why churches and religions exist. I've come to the understanding it was never about believing the stories in the bible actually happened. The real value was always consistent community and habitual traditions. Which make people feel more alike than different. In other words it was a massive vehicle for positive mental health routines for past generations. But it was never packaged that way, it was too focused on the stories and the book which people buy into less and less as time and generations carry on.
One of the cores to mental health is repeated ongoing positive in-person social interactions. You need to be repeatedly seeing the same groups of people, have a good time with them, and expect to be seeing them again in the near future. It is also good to have multiple, separate groups too.

Well stated, seems like this is a piece we're missing a lot of, aka, need a lot more of in today's world.
