WoW. I loved it at first:
- Tanking was involving and satisfying. - Tradeskills produced items that were relevant and useful right out of the gate. - Questing was a viable path for leveling in that I didn't have to rely solely on killing random mobs over and over and over again. - The land is diverse and interesting - lore, scenery, etc. Then, I hated it: - Those quests became grinds themselves and they were repetitious to the point of mind-numbing. - Magic-using classes left me wanting. - New zones were just higher-level enemies than the previous zone and the old quests in new skins. - Mobs are evenly placed such that running through at low level will get you aggro'ed 99% of the time. As you get higher in level for a given area, the aggro radii shrink so that you can run "through the aggro gaps." - For a given area, mobs are in a set level range. There are no griffons one-shotting you while you're killing level 5 trash. It's too "safe." Sure, some zones have differing level ranges of mobs, but they never overlap. - Barrens chat. - The world doesn't feel as big and grandiose as Everquest. When you go into 1st person, it just doesn't feel believable. The polished, cartoony look doesn't do it for me either ... but then again, it's supposed to be Warcraft. It's a good game, don't get me wrong; I'd just rather play good ol' EQ. Also, I feel like more effort and pride went into creating and progressing my 70th-level Mage in EverQuest, whereas my 50ish-level (I think he's 54 or 55??) Warrior in WoW wasn't anywhere near as satisfying.

I played wow from beta until about 5 months ago.
I agree with the general sentiment that WoW was definitely better during the vanilla and also the first expansion. The first expansion IMO had some very difficult raid encounters and the addition of the first heroic 5 mans had a good level difficulty to them. I think though, that a lot of players reacted negatively to paying for content they never could see -and from there things got a lot easier for the 'normal modes' later even heroic 5 mans became way to easy when CC was no longer needed. I think the game was further ruined in Lich King by basically making 3 roles - tank, heal, and DPS, which basically lost all sense of class identity. I still think wow is the king of all mmo's and the best mmo ever created, it took a lot of the good things from other mmo's and brought them in a polished package with a world and characters people love. That said I still love classic EQ as my first MMO, and have immensely enjoyed reliving the past through this server. | ||
