Now that I understand your difficulties, I'll back off from making fun of you. It's just not right.

But I personally think doing it is to fill some self-esteem void or to feel like one is following a higher purpose in a world falling away from religion

Look, I thought of a way to maybe get through to you. Your observation has empirical data to support it.

Here is the simple formula. People have replaced religion with politics. This has good and bad consequences, and neutral consequences.

When you accuse the left of using politics, and you yourself discuss and are clearly "invested" in politics, it proves your point more than you perhaps would like. For you too are falling away, invested not in God but man. Politics.

I'm a heathen with nothing to lose. That means unlike people who believe they immortal, time is a naturally scarce resource. A bunch of chuckleheads screaming for pronouns and bathroom access, or guns and God, is not nearly as fun as nearly anything else in life except perhaps anal prolapse. You got that prolapse draggin behind you, ain't gonna get no crack even if you say please.

politics is still just religion.

it's about control. no king ever really believed in jesus magic, but you behave better (produce more [not you the person, but you the serfs {in aggregate}]) if you think he does.

It’s a matter of how we incorporate our investment in politics into how we see ourselves

The left, as I see it, like to incorporate a sense of moral superiority into their personal sense of self-worth. They get that moral superiority by using an “oppression index” type of hierarchy given to them by propagandists to decide which intersectional group has it the worst in America, then focusing on helping those going from the most disadvantaged up while simultaneously pretending that resources are infinite. Sort of like how Jon Stewart one time sarcastically commented “free money and unicorns for everyone!” or something to that nature

The big change in the last decade or so is the left has stopped giving a fuck about any right wing, whether that’s a poor or a black right wing person, etc. If they’re right wing, fuck them, they’re the enemy. So their altruism comes across as hollow in my mind. A true saint would be willing to forgive and care for literally everyone (maybe barring the most extreme outliers)

How I am like the right is I don’t mind telling people “no”, or admitting that some people might just be completely fucked by circumstance. I wouldn’t say it’s that I don’t care, but maybe that I don’t care enough, or that I am too much of a realist

I have no problem taking the moral lowground. I am the person on the lifeboat pushing people back with the oars, because if too many people climbed on, the entire boat goes down and everyone drowns. The left doesn’t want people like me, but any system with limited resources NEEDS people like me to tell someone “sorry, you might just be fucked”. And yes, maybe one day that fucked person would be me too

But yes, you are correct that I am not all that religious. Although I don’t see politics as my “replacement” religion, because like I said, I take the moral lowground in a lot of areas, politically

Look, you can either trust me, or I can explain how I've kind of left that building so, to speak.

I got you. And I'm with you. Hope you don't mind I condensed it. People can click up.

I do not even go to any forums or reddits that are almost completely dominated by people doing the neo-puritan shuffle. If there is anti-fun, I think I've seen it. I worked in a profession dominated by it. So. enough said about that.

The reaction to this has been straight out of American History X opportunism theory. That's been in the gaming world a lot. Maybe its fading.

Meanwhile, I love the fact that every night when I go to sleep, the 7th fleet is just waking up.... Maybe the common thread is, people who think the world is ending are simply wrong. Things are relatively superb, because that's post-war order 101. Which is still in session. As for justice? Justice is always slow, and I study history. The US is part of a wide range of countries making very excellent decisions for the good, for a while now, if you grant some chill in your timescale.

tl;dr 80 years ago: Japan is nuked. Today: Japan is one of our buddies. Verdict: I think I'm optimistic about the future.
