I used them a lot on pvp servers, but never did on non-pvp. people who used them on non-pvp didn't bother me beyond the first pings of annoyance. instead I questioned my own reasons for not using anon/roleplay. i questioned our need to know everything. we're information addicted. the pings of annoyance went away.
anyway, after thinking about this for a while, i came to some conclusions... and the trolling begins... When I see item names in chat, i want a link that tells me the stats... When I see an item link, I want it to tell me what monster it drops on and what the name is... When I see an item link, I want to see which zone the monster that drops it is in... When I see the item link, I want to see what level the monster is that drops the item.... When I click on an item link, I want to be able to click on a button that teleports me instantly to the area where the item drops... When I click on an item link, just give me the item already by allowing me to click a button that says "get item" because camping the named is boring and unnecessary... Get the picture? When I am going through a zone, I want there to be landmarks so I know how to travel through the zone... When I am gpoing through a zone, I want it to be small and simple so I know how to travel through the zone... When I am going through a zone, i want a map of the zone printed out so I know how to travle through the zone... When I am going through a zone, I want a map window so I know how to travel through the zone... When I am going through a zone, I want the option to teleport to anywhere in the zone on the map window so I know how to travel through the zone... When I am going throgh a zone, just put everything in one spot because i hate having to teleport to all of the spots so I know how to travel through the zone... Get the picture? Some things we work for, somethings we get free, and some people are never happy until they have everything and there's nothing left to do. I understand the pleas that some people have about needing to know some things without working for it, but when you drive this need to its ultimate completion, it's focused on the destination, not the journey. I believe the journey is the joy. If you do not enjoy the journey, the destination will never, ever make you happy. You will never be happy. You will always need and want. a billion dollars won't make you happy. all the riches in the world mean nothing. max level won't make you happy. having all the knowledge of the universe won't make you happy unless you're happy without it. I understand the frustration people feel when they /who all and get a bunch of anons. but for once in your life, sit back and think in non-reactionary terms. actually question your own self, have you ever done that?

/anon is in mmo games for a good reason...It is like when people get thier phone number unlisted, because of too many idiots calling them to buy magazine subscriptions.

People just need to stfu and play like they want to play, and let other people play like they want to play.
Don't like people going /a? Fine, don't group with them, port them, rez them, or do business with then if you don't want to. That's your prerogative. I don't fault you for it at all. But people that want the devs to change the rules to force other people to do things the way THEY want them done just piss me off. People like that is what's wrong with this country.. errr, game. Oh, and I rarely use them myself, because that's how I choose to play.

I've nearly always played anon on my toons, I played a ranger back on AB before I quit and became somewhat obsessed with making plats and killing oldworld mobs. The problem was other people did the same thing - being anon lowered the competition. If I know all the other people that are farming as soon as server comes up I can move through zones to targets much much faster.
Another reason I went anon (while guilded, I was in raiding guilds my whole 3-4ish years on AB) was because I simply wanted to do something without being bothered or being found. For example - raiding with friends in a different guild (doing content far below what we were currently farming so the lockouts didn't matter), or one grouping raid instances for augs or alts or something. Used to get told off all the time for that, apparently some people are under the delusion that being in a guild requires you to display your tag the entire time. 'Course the guild window on live shows your location when you're using /role and it makes your name purple & that bugged me [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] so /anon it was! People shouldn't use any argument that has to do with "you shouldn't be hiding from your guild mates". Sure, I'm guilded with them, but that doesn't require some sort of mystical bond that lets them know where I am and what i'm doing every second i'm logged in. Shit, I don't even have to like the majority of them in order to be guilded with them. If I've just finished a days work and want to chill out and buff people in crushbone rather than doing some long boring camp to twink a guildies alt that they can't solo, that's my choice. Anon helps avoid situations like that.
