Classic: Gfay - Kelethin, orc hill, elves, faeries, everything you could want from a high fantasy rpg game, I don't think I even made it off Faydwer for a couple of months when I first started, and gfay was my home.
Kunark: FV - My first Kunark experience, and making that treacherous run to LOIO dodging spiders way higher than me was always a rush. Occasionally I would get ganked by that bad ass iksar necromancer too.
Velious: ToFS - My first velious experience was Iceclad ocean, and seeing a bad ass tower in the middle of it was exciting and I spent a ton of time exploring it and checking it out. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Any place where the downtime waiting for spawns is minimal or non-existent.

All of Velious, that expansion was incredible. I remember taking the boat to Iceclad for the first time and getting to the Gnome camp then grouping outside ToFS. Then onward across Eastern Wastes to The Great Divide. How cool was it to run under the giant spires for the first time while avoiding Giants and their direwolves? When I saw the glowing creek and followed it through the waterfall to discover Thurgadin I was completely hooked on that expansion.
I feel exactly the same way. For my all time favorite gaming content, I have Final Fantasy Tactics and EQ's Shards of Velious in interchangeable #1 and #2 slots.

Oddly enough, EverQuest and Final Fantasy Tactics were side by side in Game Informer's 200 Greatest Games of All Time list (numbers 43 and 44 I believe).

I had monitored eqclassic.org for a few years hoping they could recreate vanilla EQ. When I learned of this place, that vanilla was live, and that the plan was to go through Velious...

Mm. Happy dwarf. Happy dwarf indeed.

I was a hardcore FFT player. I figured out that I could dupe Excaliburs, have four dual-excalibur-wielding knights with move+3, blade grasp, and monk side skills, and one black mage (with all white mage/oracle/etc skills which could be used with calc) with master calc side skills and an insane amount of spell damage gear (along with a chameleon robe to absorb holy dmg).

The first move of every fight thereafter was either CT 4 holy or CT 3 holy. It would literally kill every single opponent on the map and heal all of mine.

So ridiculous.

Gosh, now I want to play again.

I'm jaded about Iceclad. One of my biggest ups in my original eq career was completely randomly dropping Stormfeather while exploring. Conversely, camping Lodizal for 2 months dealing with 2 ninja looters, and multiple KSs sort of sucked.

Even to that point ^, I finally got my Lodizal map piece on my birthday in like 2002.

Oasis.

It's a zone that remains exactly as I remember it. The crowded population, wide level range, non stop action, options of orcs or crocs (and multiple places to camp each), annoyance of madmen adds, imminent danger of SG/spec trains, getting buffs at the dock, proximity to civilization, bright and sunny and easy to navigate at any level, perfect for both grouping and soloing, excitement of getting a piece of Lockjaw.

P99 really captures the spirit of the zone I experienced 10 years ago, and it's got a lot of perks that make it a really great place to level for a long time.

Classic, my favorite zone would have to be Highkeep. Soloing Nobles was crazy exp as a necro with a rogue pet.

Kunark: Mines of Nurga. Nobody ever went here, and the solo exp was incredible.

Velious: Kael Drakkel. Awesome raids.

It wasn't so much that I could cheese it - it was that I figured out how. Once I did figure it out, the rest of my play was devoted to seeing what else I could do.

But nothing ever really compared to calc + holy + high spell damage + holy absorb - it was just too easy to blow up the whole field...
