Let me just say this about Yngwie:

Yngwie is easy to hate. He is a huge fucking douchebag. He puts Ferrari stickers on his Strats. I think they help him play faster or something...

I am not old enough to have legit listened to Yngwie Malmsteen in the 80s. I came to know him when I got into the electric guitar and turned to Youtube to satisfy my thirst.

Watching Youtube it is extremely easy to hate Yngwie. He's such a pudgy self-righteous bastard. He wears a ridiculous amount of bling. I'm usually wishing there was more gratuitous guitar playing in a song, but when I watch Yngwie on Youtube, it's just too much. I get burned out on harmonic minor so fast listening to Yngwie.

Maybe Yngwie always was a douchebag, but he wasn't always such a douchebag musically. If you've only given Yngwie a chance on Youtube, try out some of his earlier studio efforts. Before I got into rock music I was a devout classical fan (and player). Yngwie, for a while, did the whole neo-classical shred thing with a lot of heart and talent. I found his studio work to be a lot more convincing and compelling.

Check out this music video to see how hard he used to rock!

The weirdo singer you see there is Jeff Scott Soto, some Steve Perry replacement nowadays.

At this point I don't know what to say about Yngwie. Remember when he did G3 in 2003 with Satriani and Vai? Lol, that was a match made in hell.

Well, I have to go do laundry. I'm going to spur some more electric guitar conversation when I get back.

They all get blown away by Michael Angelo Batio if you want to talk about technical ability. They can't do what he does. No one can.

If you're talking about like "stunt" guitar playing, I think Vai beats MAB. Unfortunately, they're both fags. Vai probably has everyone (except Shawn Lane) beat in sheer ability, he just usually chooses to play his guitar like a stupid self-absorbed little bitch. MAB is pretty good technically, yes, but he is pretty much the most unconvincing guitarist I've ever heard. That's why no one except some metal kids from the 80s and guitar weirdos have ever heard of him. You can play two guitars at the same time, MAB, good for you. Unfortunately, no matter how many guitars you play, you will never have any heart. You are a machine. MAB always kind of reminded me of Moe from Calvin and Hobbes with those stupid bangs.

*edit*
I think Jason Becker, had ALS not taken him in his prime, would go down in history as the greatest shredder ever.

OH YEAH - I can't pick a favorite, but the fact that no one mentioned Eddie Hazel makes me disappointed in all of you.
I thought about mentioning Eddie Hazel, but I don't know, have you ever tried listening to the entire Maggot Brain album? Eddie can rock out, but that sort of funk is just a little too ridiculous sometimes. Eddie is all heart, and in that regard he sort of lacks a little bit of depth muscially I think.

Also, I think that since Cribanox seconded my opinion on Jason Becker, we should at least mention Michael Lee Firkins since he is Jason's chosen player. Michael Lee Firkins playing on the Jason Becker album (from after he was pretty much paralyzed) Persepctive is sublime.

This type of discussion always gets bogged down by genre divergence. Some guitarists can't be compared with each other. While I'm ITT again, I'm gonna point out that no one mentioned Buddy Guy. He is still the best blues guitarist around, and hes like 80 something. See him before he dies, especially if you can see him playing with another big name guitarist, since competition brings out a mean streak in him and he plays angry like no one else.
