Surprisingly no. Here's the policy:

Naming Policy
Character names in EverQuest should be thematically consistent with the high-fantasy environment of EverQuest. These guidelines apply both forenames and surnames, and also to the combination produced by a forename and surname. (For example, the first name Clint and the last name Eastwood are both acceptable names separately, but Clint Eastwood is not.)

The server staff can, in accordance with all described rules and ultimate discretion, provide assistance with surname changes, including names with multiple capital letters and/or a single accent grave (`). Examples of this are Kirn V`Last, Harl McTarnigal, Leeza MacTeagan.

The server staff will be happy to change your surnames on request, however we will not provide forename changes unless the name violates the naming policy.

The following names are considered unacceptable.

It's implied that the GMs will actively fix violations, but based on what everyone has reported they only fix a name when someone reports it. So it seems to me that it'd be more accurate to say something like "These rules are only enforced when a player reports a violation, or at the staff's discretion" and then it'd be clearer that you can be Dopey McDoperson as long as it doesn't cheese anyone off.

Couldn't you have kept the name, and just had the same capitalization as everyone else? It doesn't seem random at all, or like the GMs prefer dumb names, it's just that they don't give exceptional names simply because you asked for one.

Or the GM's justifiably don't give a shit about the naming policy, period, because it's so trivial relative to the server's other problems. I give them credit for not listening to people whining about superficial nonsense (such as this thread) and doing meaningful work with their volunteer hours rather than devoting time to this.

I also enjoy seeing clever and funny names once in a while. This is such an old game . . . most of the people playing are adults now. People just need to relax and allow themselves a sense of humor. There's more important things to worry about on Project 1999 than player names for fuck's sake.

I was just wandering around the forums when I noticed a thread for funny names, which reminded me that I actually really didn't like the fact that after reading the server rules before logging in for the first time, half of the names were ridiculous or at least not at all following the guidelines set when I finally was in-game.

It states that any names that are copyrighted or trademarked, or are phrases or would make a phrase when read the right way (like Crymea River) or names that wouldn't fit in the Genre (Switchblade, Cannabis) were not allowed. I'm wondering if that changed at some point? Or is it just that it would be a huge pain to fix? Is it that the GM's don't care or they have their own funny named characters they don't want to delete?

Personally I would like to see all of those names removed, mostly because it would make the feel of the game much more authentic, but also because grouping with someone who is named Quit Everquest is just plain ridiculous. Also the basic rules that are set down should be followed or at the very least attempted.

Let me know your thoughts! Is this something that also annoys you? would you like to see it changed?
